Biggest knife... What's your personal limit?

For a folder I like 3.5 to 4"

For a fixed blade I don't have a max limit. I'll carry a machete when needed.

Don’t carry a fixed blade but the ZT 0452cf at 4.1” is my limit for a folder.

EDU folder: 4" max, typically CS Recon or Spyderco Chinook 3.
EDU fixed: 5" max for backpacking (fave is Ratmandu), 4" max for urban/work environment usually in a paracord 'mecharness' rig. Most often at work though, carry a 3.5" fixed, a Spydie Street Beat.

My EDCs for years have had between 2.75 - 3.5in blade lengths, and I've got no desire for more. Anything larger and I find I get annoyed with them in my pocket.

Other task specific carry depends. I like a ~4in blade for hiking (usually a mora), maybe a larger blade around a fixed campsite or similar.

The largest knife currently in my EDC rotation is ~6.5", I have a couple larger BKT tools (7 & 9) and have no issues carying them when needed for a specific purpose (camping or just hanging out outdoors) but don't EDC them.

I plan to pick up a Spyderco Respect this year and intend it to be an EDC when I do. No blade length limit here in OH thankfully

Edited to add: I find i choose a ~5" EDC atleast 90% of the time, not much a 6 - 7" blade can do you cant handle with a well thought-out 5" knife.

Scoping out the future road through the glen for the utv. Not that they can be seen in this picture, but anything short of a machete or wak gets boring real fast what with the thousands of 'jagger bushes' in your path

For anything seriously outdoorsy, a 10" Livesay RTAK, or a Becker BK-4, usually as a back-up to a 2Hawks Warbeast. Lighter outdoorsy stuff gets a 6-8" fixed, blade style depending on what I think I might have to do with it. And always a folder for back-up. In town, 6" fixed is the legal limit, and when I was younger I regularly exceeded that limit. But these days I usually carry a 4" fixed blade. And a folder in the 3.5-4" range.

And a .45, in case I'm attacked by a rabid armadillo. Or something.

I'm a small knife guy. Bird and trout knives are some of my favorites. Can't see any need for more than 6" blade on a fixed blade, and 4" blade on a folder. And that is the unusual exception. Nearly all of my knives are below those limits. Folders typically in the 3.75" range or less.
The one place where I do go big is with the filet knife I have with me fishing. Then 10"-12" blade or more is great to have if you catch something substantial like stripers, or tuna. Also have smaller 6"-8" blades for fileting crappie and other smaller tasty morsels.

The upper size limit for my EDC is the Spyderco Military (or a few others of similar size), i've found that anything above that is just not practical for my daily needs. I do usually have my ESEE 4 in my daily backpack though, so I guess that counts too ;).

I often carry a crooked river, Spyderco Military or CS 4max. I'd go 1/2" larger, maybe even a full inch larger in a folder.

I don't edc fixed. When I use one, I have no limit.

I have a brand new Protech TR4 on the way. It's a bit bigger and heavier than my Military. So this will be my biggest edc to date. And my first automatic.

It’s funny how over the years I’ve carried such a diverse amount of blades

Years ago when I was traveling abroad and especially on back pack trips I carried a 9 1/2 inch blade Bagwell Bowie everywhere

I have 3 or 4 sheaths for this piece .....it is a favorite

Now for most my outdoor and casual stuff it’s a 5 inch bladed Hurak

Or a Mirabile Tsunami

For dress as in when I’m in a suit or working one of these NYS

So as my carry pieces the older I get grow smaller I’ve taken to carrying a much larger blade as I briefcase or vehicle piece currently I’m alternating between a few

I also carry a gun 90 % of the time

Mirabile KO Wak

Marchand Smatchet

Winkler Sayoc Hawk

I’ll be doing a video soon on this witha Tendick Shoulder harness system

I EDC folders from 3.5" to 4" so 4" is about my limit (Spyderco Military and Spyderco Manix 2 XL). I had a ZT 0200 and determined it was just a bit too big for my EDC mostly due to weight and handle thickness. I would like to try a larger EDC such as the Spyderco Tatanka.
I rarely carry a FB and usually want it to fit in my pocket so I carry little ones. Our state law had a 5.5" limit so I ended up selling a lot of my FBs and bought a Ratmandu for outdoor or whatever use. Now our length limit went away so I could pick something longer.

Charlie Mike Charlie Mike As far as daily carry, I'm currently working 5 days a week in the lumber yard of a hardware store so I bring larger folders that fall in the ~4" blade length arena. Outside of work, the largest blades I tend to carry are ~3.5"; I find for my uses, that tends to be more than enough. As far as "big" goes, I tend to like length and slimness more than chunkier and taller blades. And fixed blades aren't my thing, so I stick to folders.

I tend to prefer folding knives for day to day carry. The size is pretty predictable for me now..... generally about a 4" maybe 4.25" handled (closed length) and 2.75"-3.25" blade length. The feel of the knife is very important to me as far as whether or not I will continue to carry it. I like a new knife as much as the next guy, but if it is overly large, I know I will probably not carry it after a couple days.

Tried to carry fixed blades and generally was uncomfortable with anything over about 3.5" blade length. In essence, other than strength gained with the fixed blade, they are the same size as my preferred folder size. I often will have the same fixed blade with me in the woods although I like about a 5-5.5" blade in the woods for general purposes. It's a safety thing for me in the woods. I know that I can do more work with the slightly larger blade in the woods if I really need to. >7" is getting a bit on the large size for me generally speaking unless I'm playing.

I feel comfortable carrying a short machete in the woods if I will be chopping. I'll carry any machete that I find useful in the woods if I feel that I will actually use it. So, often I carry things that never even leave the sheath....

Well the answer to that question is, as some body once said, a many splendored thing.
Oh look . . . it’s a Cold Steel sort of day . . . not that i like their stuff much . . .
:D

so anyway talking folders; for my out and about EDC that I enjoy a lot the Ti Lite IV (bottom knife above) seems a little long and I feel like I am going to get pounced on by the Sheeple Police. I feel a little self conscious opening it in public. Until I start using it then it feels just like coming home and everything is JUST FINE ! So that’s four inches.

But then when I get home, or on my day off at home, very often the Holdout I (middle knife above) goes into my pocket and it feels perfectly natural to use it and I just love this knife. So that’s about six inches

Fixed blade wise I use the Cold Steel Kitchen Classic (called The Slicer the large one above) just all the dambed time. I just love the handle (I put it on my Grail folder I like it so much) and the blade is thin so it is indeed a great slicer. Not that I open mail with it or cut strings off my clothes with it but I use it most days.
So that’s nine inches.

“ WHAT, pray tell, was my last Balrog battling, mega hurt definite kill knife like piece of hardware that I have added of late to my arsenal” you might ask ?

That would be my Case Teardrop single blade in natural bone . . . I unwrapped it just now for this post picture. Ferocious looking devastation just waiting to be unleashed on an unsuspecting world.
