Bill Burke fighter, progression thread

Bill has placed the tang on the block of handle wood and drawn around it.

Marked center of the block and center of the tang.

Getting ready to drill a hole in the center of the tang.

The handle pattern is put on the block and checked to make sure everything is okay.

The tang hole and the cool tool from John Perry, that turns the hole into a slot.

A better shot of the working end of the tool.

Cool, it fits.

The handle has been cut to rough shape everything slid together.

Shaping the guard, finger reliefs milled out.

The face of the guard has been dyed and the profile of the front scribed onto it after finding and marking center.

Bill uses drawing templates to help get symmetrical shapes.

Everything put back together and the guard temporarily glued to the handle.

The rough shaping of everything pretty much finished.

Looking good. Bill cut's things very close. I have to get one of those hole hogs. Thanks for doing this thread it is a good one.

That John Perry gizmo works sooooo well.

Shaping up real nice - it's going to be a sweet piece.

Keith, Bill,

Nice piece guys. You're amassing some collection, Keith, can't think of anyone more deserving. Bill, that guard you made for your test knife looks great, seems like it would have been very time consuming to make. Can't say I agree with some of the design elements you're incorporating into your blades but you need to make what's right for you. The collars/habakis are a nice touch.

The finished knife. The bright spot on the blade is from the lighting. I have asked Bill to take a few more larger photos of the knife, blade and guard area, so that folks can get a better look.

Do you have large hands, Keith?

Beautiful knife!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I think I see what you mean. The butt of the handle looks too squared off in this picture. The overall length of the handle seems proportional to the blade, but it's like the end of the handle should transition from the palm side to the finger side at a more acute angle. Or I could be talking out of my ass.
In any event, it's a sweet looking knife:thumbup:

Like the blade/guard area. I'm sure fit/finish is impeccable as is with every one of Bill's knives I have examined.

I will have to agree with others on the handle. However it's the diameter/girth that's a little disproportional in my opinion or as STeven suggested it looks as it's made for a very large hand.

The knife will be heading to Chuck Burrows for a sheath. After it gets to me I will certainly check out the handle, but to me it looks pretty darn good. I think the shaded area in front of the handle may make the handle look a little thicker than it is.

I would like to thank Bill and keith for a very good WIP Thread. That knife to me clearly show's why Bill is A Master Smith.
