So my birthday is at the end of the month, and seeing as I gave away the first knife I ever made on my birthday, it has become a tradition with me to give a present if a knife to somebody else on that day. That is what shall happen here. The rules are simple- guess how many blades are here:

I lucked into being the first post in a for sale thread a while ago and got a load of slipjoint blades in various stages of manufacture, some back springs, liners, and even a handle scale or two. I plan on making a number of knife related 'how it is done' displays. This was just a first step, mostly to get them off of my table in my shop. They have clued me in to a number of manufacturer aspects I had no clue about previously. I even sent some to Rob! of Knifemaker.ca to hardness test with my last batch of heat treating blades, and he was gracious enough to do the testing for me. I was very surprised to find the results, some of what I thought looked fully finished were soft as heck, while others were at hardness expected.
They are on the left of this pic- inserted here until I can find my close up picture.

So what is the catch?
Simple- guess how many blades are on the board in my shop! Hint- not all of the nails have blades on them, can openers and punches do not count. Open only to Canadians! (I kid- open to anybody!!). One guess per person, unless you have more than 100 posts in traditional- then you get 2. Gold members and above get 2 extra guesses, and mods(not just traditional mods, but other mods and all former mods) can have another for 4!!! Please leave at least a day between guesses.

What is in it for me, you might ask? Well that is for me to decide! But I am pretty sure some aspect sounds like blammoth mivory.... Just remember that knives are meant to be used, and mine are. Safe queens will not be given, because I own none!
Tell me what you like in a slipjoint, and what does not suit you much. Your answer will impact what you will receive, so be honest and lay your slipjoint heart bare. I don't just want this to be an "I'll take 26" kind of thread, even though I am asking for that too! Pictures of knives/off topic stories and anything else applicable to the forum is encouraged!!

I would like to thank all Traditional Forum contributers, I've not always been the most positive poster here, but love diversity in knives, love learning about the diverse selection available in the slipjoint and other trafitionals world, and the diverse selection of knife users in Bladeforums as a whole, and here in specific!

By the way- if anybody wants to send me a swayback Wharncliffe with Spey and punch blades foru birthday I wouldn't say no......;)

Contest closes when somebody guesses correctly, or the closest person to the number on my birthday (26th).

Good luck and let's hear some stories!
Kris

Great GA.

My guess is 72.

I like a smallish main blade (5.5cm or less), because that's legal EDC length in Japan. I love a main clip blade and a secondary wharncliffe/sheepsfoot. I prefer bone or stag handles, but anything is OK. Apart from that, I'm game for anything.

Thanks for the responces so far! Just remember that this is a personalized giveaway, and I can't personalize the gift(s) if you don't personalize your responces!!!
Thank you for personalizing it Chinpo- I did not know about Japan's length limit!

I'm going to say 85, great GAW!

As far as slipjoints, I like the wharncliff but a clip is also great, I like natural type of colors for the handle, like my amber bone peanut or stag is even better. any bolsters I would like silver in color. I would say dimensions/design kinda like a sway back jack. I've been wanting a good blade to put in my back pocket.

Thank you for the chance, and happy birthday even though you said it was on the 26th.

I'll guess 48, thanks for the chance, and hope you have a great birthday

I've recently figured out that my ideal slipjoint knife is single blade and under 3-3/4" closed. Any larger than that or more than one blade and I usually end up selling it cause it doesn't get carried and like you, there are no safe queens in my house :D All get carried and used (it may be lightly but hey, cutting up plastic 6-pack rings is still use!) or away they go. I prefer modern folders when getting into the 4"+ range.

I will guess 84. I really like stockmen best of all and the way you can keep different blades sharpened specifically for different uses. My favorite is the large (41/4) Case. I like bone scales but really like stag.

Looks like 55 to me.

Awesome haul, there. Hope you are able to make a profit from this, and at the least, I know you'll have a heck of a learning experience, as evidenced by your post. Cool, and kudos to you for being brave enough to jump on a deal like that.

For me, slipjoints are a relatively new item of interest. I've enjoyed man-made materials in modern folders for quite a while, but by chance found that the natural materials keep my attention longer, due to the individual characteristics of each and every piece. I've spent a lot of time on the traditional forum over the last 2 years, and have widened my collection considerably. I've found that I prefer crisp clean grinds, smooth rounded handles, and highly figured scales, whether jigged or natural. Pearl makes me extremely happy, as it is both smooth to the touch, and can be highly figured in the shine and shimmer. I also like a wood with nice chatoyancy(sp?). I also like things that rhyme with slammoth drivory.:D And I know what you mean about "no safe queens." Every one of my knives spends at least a week in my pocket, the moment it arrives, and all are still in the EDC rotation. That has lead to some chipped pearl, and cracked bone, but that's what makes things interesting.

Happy (early) Birthday, and thanks for the giveaway.

How about 65. Great thread, happy birthday!
I've come to carry and appreciate patterns under 4" but also have an appreciative soft spot for the HUGE slipjoints (4.5"+)

To me... it looks like 112 blades around ;)

Thank you for the chance, Kris! And yes - I play a little jews harp :D

I´d like a jackknife with a clip main blade and a wharnie seconday. I don´t own a knife in the dogleg frame til now... ;) On a jackknife, I´d like to see any wood (ebony or maple burl), because I don´t have any wooden handles jackknives. All of my knives are users, except of one ;).

Thank you for the chance - a great idea for a GA!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll guess 84, why not?
I have come to appreciate slippies with blades smaller than 3.5" (what's legal over here for me) and wide-ish blades recently, but I cannot really say what I enjoy most in a slippy because of all of the diverse things in other that make different patterns work for me. I like a lot of things, and I like trying out new stuff. I love wood and the look of stag, but I have never owned any stag. I really like weird patterns and odd blade combinations that compliment each other's strength's & weaknesses. I won't lie, I use my knives pretty hard.

Honestly, I never got the whole trapper thing; there is something about the spey that I do not get. Then again, I use my knives for work, not food!

I appreciate your generosity, and I hope that you have a wonderful birthday!!! Good luck everyone!

Have a great Birthday.
I like clip blades, but not long clips. Don't have a 2 blade "jack" knife in my collection, so that or a "powder horn" will be next.
Mammoth Ivory is nice, especially barked. However, can't really call it traditional. As a matter of fact in my opinion the best Mammoth looks like fine Sambar stag, and stag is definitely traditional. Ironic eh?

So what are you planning on doing with all of those blades Kris? I bet that you could make yourself some pretty sweet blades for your preferences!!
Speaking of which, what is your favorite pattern? What do you like to see in your slippies?

77 seems like a decent number

i like mid sized folders (3 1/2 seems to be about right)
2 blades is preferable, but a single blade with a lockback would be a nice change of pace

HAPPY bday and thanks for the chance.
