Bizarre Foods: Survival Episode

Just proves how difficult starting a fire can be ... even for an expert.
The shit eatting grin on Andrew's face when he finally got a fire going was priceless.

Yes it does and yes it was. Try, try and try again. Makes me feel better about some of my failures!!

I really enjoyed it. He did suprisingly well, and had a great attitude. I loved when mike was razzin about him sleepin late.

Great episode. I enjoy that show.

I think all his knowlage about exotic foods, and his travel experiance really helped him. I also heard them talking about a survival school mike instructs at in that area. Hed be a cool guy to meet.

Me too, on all counts! I also like how they showed the usefulness of a machete. I think a month there would slim ole' Andrew down some!! I think I could stand to join him too. Ha!

Yeah that made life alot easier for him!!

The knife sucked, but I suppose its better then none. :p

Could anyone identify that knife they gave him? I just watched the episode and it was pretty good. I was surprised how comfortable he seemed.

One thing I noticed, and some of you more experienced guys could help me on this, was that he ate a raw grasshopper. I've heard that they can contain parasites and should be roasted/cooked first, if possible. Any input?

Ive heard the same.

The blade looked like a stainless dive knife of sorts to me...

I'm watching the Andrew Zimmern survival episodes as I type this. I gotta say, this Mike Hawke fella that taught him appears to have all his stuff in one bag, if you know what I mean. I'll look for more info from him for certain.

I'm also REALLY impressed with Mr. Zimmern's willingness to just... keep... trying. Bless his heart, he shows a great positive spirit and the desire to get stuff done. Like me, and perhaps many of us, he's not an athlete. But by golly, he has the guts to keep at it. I dare say he has what it takes to survive. :) He's not giving up, even though he's hungry He realizes that shelter and hydration will keep him alive.

The fat bastard (no offense meant) is plenty tough and plenty motivated... I suspect that what's needed to survive.

Plus, the flabby sumbiscuit knows more about cooking pretty much anything, than most of us will ever dream. I'd be mighty glad to have him on my team. :)

Yup, Andrew has a film crew with him. But he's very honest about it. I can deal with that. :)

What if there was a show with Mr. Mears or Mr. Stroud and Mr. Zimmern? That would be wicked cool and I bet there would be some yummy recipies. :)

Yeah! Then the crap that they eat could actually be made palatable! It's one thing to know what you CAN eat, but to turn it into something you WANT to eat? That's no easy task! :D

Me and old Andrew has alot in common when it comes to weight. I like him alot and can relate to how he feels in the wild. My wife calls me, instead of Survivorman, she says Im ReclinerMan.

I think being motivated is a big part of any successful survival personality (I am sure its been said before) and his all around great attitued I am sure helps keep his spirit up.

That knowledege of food would be invaluable to you. I mean he has been so many places and seen how so many cultures live and survive that I am sure alot of that info is just sunk into his brain. He could surely point out edibles that I couldnt and then make them taste good. The man has a cast Iron stomach I'll give him that....then again you never hear about the mornings after he eats some of this stuff.

I was glad he was realistic and honest throughout the show about himself and the fact the crew was right there. He's not a proclaimed survival expert and he knows it and I liked that about the show.

I watched it last night, interesting episode. Andrew Z. has an enthusiasm that makes him entertaining to watch, this is his natural talent.

He has no problems working with knives because he is a chef, he has more knife-handling experience than most of us ever will. I recognize the "survival" knife from somewhere, I think I've seen it as a cheapo sold in eBay. I noticed how rusty the machete was on day 2, was it really brand new on day 1? (I missed the beginning part of the show.)

I've been watching this while doing other stuff. Seems like a pretty good episode. I really like Hawke; I'd rather watch him more than any other survivalist on TV, but it seemed like it took him an awful long time to build that fire at the beginning. He was persistent though, which is what counts. Andrew had an excellent attitude about it all.

I know what you mean about how long it took "the expert" to start a fire. I would at least expect him to put the blade on top of the tinder and pull the flint away from the tinder, instead of scraping and hacking at the flint and scattering all the tinder around.

He probably had a decent amount of magnesium down as well. The shavings looked very coarse too instead of finer thin shavings which can catch a spark easier and quicker.

I was also pretty impressed with the hooch (shelter) Andrew built.
Yeah Myke mentioned it was a bit too large but still not a bad job for his 1st solo attempt.
I wonder if it was the jungle humidity that caused Myke to spend damn
near an hour trying to start that fire ?

I did like that they showed it took him an hour. They very easily couldve done another take. Took him a bit, but it didnt look like the knife was throwing very good sparks, maybe the tinder was a little damp from the sea spray...Who knows...
