Alrighty! Finally got through some exams and got some thoughts put down. Ive been really interested to check this blade out since before Camillus went under.
So outta the box, I was very struck by the heft of this thing. I mean this blade is a beast. The pictures really dont do it justice and you need to hold it to get a good perspective. Heres some blade shots, and with a Mora 510 for comparison.
Im a big fan of the handle, very hand filling and nothing anemic about it. Gives you lots of control even with the size. The edge also was impressively sharp, it shaved hair. Made some pretty tiny fuzzies too.
The two areas where I really expected it to excel was with splitting and light chopping. I was not disappointed! It really could gnaw a hunk out of wood for its size, certainly enough to gather light stuff for a shelter. The first pic below is after about a dozen chops. It also slid through firewood without a hitch when splitting (second pic).
There was a little bit of a shift on the handles (out of the box). Im not sure if it was from previous batoning or if it came from the factory that way. Tried to get it:
I didnt snap any pics of it, but I also brought it into the kitchen to help with dinner. Did a pretty good job with meat, but less so with veggies. More of a crush versus a slice.
So overall, I was not expecting it to be quite so massive! I think the best description is a 9 chopper with a 5 blade. Its got all the beef but is a lot more compact. I dont think I could see myself climbing through the woods with this on, but itd make a really great camp knife. Gathering and cleaning up firewood, pounding tent pegs, choppin steaks, you name it. And of course big kudos on the big handle.
Thanks for letting me take part!!
