Bk-9 failure

he got a free replacement - and has now banged it up, too.
that's why they want to inspect this one to see if there is a problem with their process.

I think the edge geometry is a little too thin for a production chopper. I'm referring to the primary grind, which supports the actual edge. If you're sloppy with your technique when chopping very hard wood, some deformation can occur.

Is'nt this where a convexed edge would really shine? There would be more shoulder actually supporting the edge.

chopping very hard wood is a specialty task. there are a number of axes i wouldn't use to do that for instance, i'd select the tool for the job. for instance, there's a gransfors bruks axe that i'd reach for first for clear woods, but it will not see hemlock if i have a say (and i will not loan it out either ;>) - on the other hand, i have a hand tuned snow and nealley that i will chop hemlock with, it's a good heavy axe - i actually have bent the edge on that one with a rather gnarly hemlock (also ripped the head clean off, but that was mostly due to the post factory dry rot in storage ;>)...

convex is the way to go imho, but that costs $$$ to do at the factory, so if a user wants that, they should either buy something with that, do it themselves, pay someone to do it...

if one is going to baton a lot as well, convex is certainly something to STRONGLY consider, and carry another knive with a fine edge for other work. like a puuko, or a bk11 or bk13, or ...

What am I not undestanding about this BIG knife??
Read the entire thread, what is actually said. You may learn something. I know I have. It is a very informative thread with some real experts with a life time of experience taking the time to pass on some real knowledge.

Regarding mil spec knives I believe that ever since WWII Ka Bar set the standard by which all military knives are measured.

Cedar can be exceedingly hard at times...that is when I employ my Arvika 5 Star axe. The BK9 is too pretty to use on the Juniper clan anyway!

Hemlock ? I now have wooley adelgid on my hemlocks !!! It's been spreading and has killed off many hemlocks in the area [Catskill & Pocono Mtns].A very sad thing to see so many hemlocks dead.
After that we'll see the emerald ash borer as it gets closer !

Good grief, is everyone going to fixate on the hemlock? I used this knife on many other things. Hemlock is not the only type of wood I processed.

Ouch I bet Ethan would take offense to that. He likes to see his knives worked and worked hard.
