BK Nessmuk And BK Nessmuk Tweener (New Stuff)

Quick, and I do mean quick rendering:

Personally, I think my Muk tweener looks better:

the Raquette profile is superior for a few reasons i won't go into. i also like the handle. if you're going Nessmuk, it's the thing imho. i'll point out the actual item doesn't have any recurve, it's all belleh. part of the appeal of the Nessmuk, like the Kephart, is the handle, change that, and you have something different.

if you're going "skinner", i like the bottom one more.

It was a quickie. I just cut the blade out from the photo, and shrunk it down until the width matched the 11 with micarta photo.

it looks like some kind of recurve happened too.

the general idea is the handle and edges all FLOOOOOW like an S. then a more different S

no choils, or guards or bumps. so many copy cats in production forgot that.

: i hate to be a negative nelly... so i won't. i'll say just keep trying :D Escabar handle or tweener at least.

look at my high rez scan of the "one true version" at least? lol :D

Galeo wanted an 11 with micarta, that's why I went with the 11. Wasn't trying to be historically accurate, haha. I did do an ESEE nessmuk once, it was fairly accurate:

lol. his needs ;)

this one is much nicer :D

but like khukri, there's a reason for the pommel :D needs da hook... don't want that shooting out of your hand

Looks like Sears had a lanyard tied around the handle for that.

i've a goodly little collection of Nessmuks

the thing that makes them a bit different than various skinning knives, "green river" types, and such, is the smooth belly, and the top curve - it's not a horn, or too proud, it adds mass, and a grippy place, it's tricky. the handle has to reflect the blade too. imho. such is beauty.

the "original" Nessmuk on the scene, as made by Raquette (aka Dale Chudinski) is a joy. got this other one, one of 3or5? custom in a special o1 that's bloomed - it's almost like Wootz:

couple more examples, we'll note the bottom item is a green river pattern (imho)

you can tell what shapes i like:

Well played, Sir.

The 'muk is tricky. I get where Bladite is going. It's hard to make one that doesn't look hideous. My own version has the built-in guard area, but is far more referential than traditional. Tempted to do a stick tang version with some scrap and see what happens. The grind is a royal pain, and would probably be easier to execute on industrial equipment or a very wide-belt machine, freehand, doing a diagonal taper like some do with kitchen knives.

I love your version. That thing is kick ass.

this is a lot like the Koster i still have. i like it. it's a good good knife. just not "that" :D

i also used to have the Koster cleaver. KIND of wish i still had it, however, i've gotten into a japanese? high carbon parkerized cleaver for my kitchen, VERY thing, VERY slicey. i kind of like it.

recently saw someone selling a european cleaver "half moon" that you would think was asian, but isn't, good steal, in two sizes: actual kitchen use, or survival cleaver. i think it's out of Spain. kinda neat.

i've been getting more into knives lately, as i cook more (it's a seasonal thing)... axes are still KING in the woods though ;)

yeah, Dale was a character...

but i did manage to score one of his handmade knives, and it's a treasure of sorts to me. i carried it for a bit. really well done.

someone in the heralds of history, i'm sad to say i can't recall the name, and due to our "secret forum" i don't know if i can search, even my old email archives... maybe? anyway, he was making a bunch of Nessmuks, pretty faithful really, and he was making his own micarta from scraps too, i think he called it "shitty carta". anyway, he gave me one, and i treasure it. that's a good design. cuts and cuts and cuts.

if the handle fatigues you, or gets in your way, it's not a good handle, even if the blade is spot on.

remember the Mora 2000? i hope so. Helle, i hope you have a few... the weird patterning on the tip? they claim it was for spreading spreadables, like PB and cream cheese.

no less the Nessmuk. that hump was a good place to put a finger, or to use as a kind of spoon.

it bothers me greatly, that certain people, at times, have come up with "the thing", and people try to copy it, and claim the name... examples abound. what really kills me are the companies that blatantly take unique patterns and call them their own - i mean jeebus - how cold is that. oh wait, that's the knife industry ;) it's okay. not naming names. nobody here, i think, for sure. it's a trend though. there are certain knives you can just point at, as "unique" and well known, and then some upstart copies them, exactly, boldly, and without shame. "because it's legal?" sigh.
