I'm comparing these two monsters right now and am wondering if anyone has experience between the two and would be willing to share. As I have a 9, 11, & 16 and an izula ii on the way the smaller big knife intrigues me. Your input would be greatly appreciated! Cheers

Have you looked at the BK-12? Made by Rowen, 6 inch blade, Becker handles. It beats both in my opinion.

I actually have not even heard of the 12. Thanks for the info. I'll check it out for sure!

I own a BK10, I used to own an ESEE 6. If that tells you anything. I thought I would love the ESEE but I just couldn't get along with it.

I have both.
I like the blade shape of the esee6 better.
The 10 has the better handles and is half the price.

I'll start by saying that I don't own a bk10, although I'm fairly familiar with the specs and style. I do own an ESEE 6 and love it. I'm sure you could see various similarities, but here are some differences (let me know what I miss):

BK10 has clip point vs drop point
BK shorter blade
BK saber grind vs full flat
6 has a choil
BK has world famous handle ergonomics made of zytel
6 has comfortable flattish Micarta handle
BK nylon sheath with small pouch vs plastic sheath on 6

I really like my 6, but I have plans to get a Bk12 someday. Like others said, I second that the ESEE 6 and Bk12 have more in common with blade length, grind and tip.

EDIT: Trailbum, good call on the price difference.

I've owned 2 6's and traded both off. The handles are very blocky and didn't fit my hands well. I here the TkC scales make a big difference but by then the 6 is twice the price. I've only played a little with the 10 but it feels good so far.

I have BK10, 12, and ESEE 6
all are good.
I modded my first 10 to a rampless drop point -- then the 12 came out.
if the 6 had no choil, it would be just about perfect. (I am not a fan of big choils)
due to the size/shape of my hands, the stock grivory on the 10 & 12 needs some adjustment in order to be comfortable enough for long term use.
with modded micarta, the 12 is just about perfect for me.
the 10 has the lowest cost of the 3 -- and is plenty of knife for most outdoor chores.

see where I'm going here?
obviously it would be best if you could get your hands on all 3 before buying, but any of the 3 will do the job.

The blade length is obviously longer on the 6, but the cutting edge is about the same because of the ESEE choil. Flat grind on the ESEE, saber on the 10.

The real difference is here.

They are both great knives made by great companies. It just depends on whether you like skinny or girthy. Your grip isn't the same as mine, or most anyone else's, so my opinion on which one will be better for you is worth exactly what it costs to read this. Either way you'll end up with a sweet new knife.

The second picture is the one that really does help me. The thin handle may be what drives me to the BK10/BK12 and change G10 from TKC. My hands are big enough already that the scales on the 16 I have needed a liner. This is really appreciated!

Glad to help :)

Aren't those scales on the Becker aftermarket (meaning didn't come with the knife)? While they are close to stock, if you're going to be fair, you cannot compare a knife with non-stock handles to one with stock handles.

FWIW, the E6 is the only one of the line that I really liked. (Ok, and the Junglas). The rest felt weird in my hand. I do think the Beckers have better handle ergos in general. Regarding thickness: the stock E6 will fill your hand way more than the stock BK-16, which is a far more nimble blade. I DO like the FFG on the 6, however. Also, I think blade length is a wash due to the choil. The BK doesn't need it for most users. I think 5" is still reasonably handy. 6 is pushing the limit.

+1
I have owned the ESEE 6 and the BK10 and the BK12. I still have the 10 & the 12 but much prefer the 12. Of all the large knives I've ever owned, the 12 is my favorite. If I could only have one knife for outdoor survival, this would be it.

I will probably end up with a 6 one of these days. I like the bigger blades. I would definitely upgrade to new scales though. I like the 10, and have had a couple of them, but just don't see what it can do that the 2 can't. Plus, I like drop points better, and the 2 doesn't have a ramp. I understand the 10 is perhaps more nimble than the 2, but for me, it really isn't. The 12 has piqued my interest on more than one occasion.

What I would like is a FFG 3/16" BK-2, that would cover a few things of both the ESEE-6 & BK-10:

1. 3/16" thick
2. No choil
3. Great handle
4. No ramp
5. Drop point

I would buy several tonight if they were available !!!!!!!!!!!!

The aftermarket handles are awesome. I didn't know they were that much more thick. The Palm swell is great! Did you purchase the blade only and add the handles? That also seems to make the purchase much easier as you get to choose your options off of the showroom floor. I just did that with an Izula II I ordered last night. It may influence a big blade decision.

One thing I see failed to be mentioned is a comparison of blade heights. I have an ESSE 6, and regular access to a BK10 (though it's not mine). The E6 has a slightly lower blade height than the B10. With a FFG on the E6, the lower blade height will make the knife more nimble, and lighter. But, on the flip side of that coin, it's less robust, and the B10 would probably take more abuse. I'm always afraid of breaking the tip off of my ESEEs. Though, I've not done that yet.

You could always do a heavy mod to a BK2, and make it what you want.
