BK12

Morning fellas, I got #738 two days ago. Question, am I imagining it, but the handles feel slightly different then the other BK&Ts that I have. Maybe a little more texture. Anyone else notice this?

Those are old Camillius scales and they are slightly larger than the current ones. Good pick up on the scales. I have large hands and prefer the Cam scales on certain blades.

GeofS GeofS FYI if you order a Kydex sheath it has to be made for Cam scales or you have to change scales. And if you want yo use Micarta scales the balance weights will have to be removed. The current scales and older Cam scales have a cavity and Micarta is solid.

Tanker, thanks for all the solid info.

I have an extra pair of micarta scales sitting around. I think I might be able to use them if I drill inside the scales where it corresponds to the balance weights. I might have to give that a go someday.

I prefer blade neutral. So it was no big deal for me. I just pulled the weights out  When it comes to our Backers a Dremel tool is a great asset for sure lol

I was reading on the ritter website that with all the balance weights installed, “the knife is neutral balanced”. I put all 3 in for the first time and to me it seems like it makes the knife handle heavy. Anyone else notice this? I usually just leave them all out.

I took mine out because the micarta handles wouldn't fit with them in place. I didn't notice any drastic difference in balance or anything like that.

All in, mine is balanced right where my index finger rests below the guard. I personally wouldn’t call that neutral but it is subjective i guess. Neutral to me means right where the handle transitions to the blade. No big deal. Just curious as to others experience. Love the 12!

Neutral is generally considered in knife vernacular to be when you have the knife gripped in your hand normally and it is balanced on your index finger. let go with the other fingers and thumb and it sits there. Thus, as you note, with weights in, the RSK Mk2 is neutral balance. Micarta handles are heaver than the hollow plastic, so no weights sorta approximates the neutral balance. If you remove material and keep the weights in, then it is very slightly handle heavy. Different strokes, which was the whole idea. ;)

I use Micarta on my 12 which I think adds a small amount of weight over the stock plastic/Grivory/whatever ones. I didn't bother to mill out the micarta to accommodate the weights so the weights have stayed out. I haven't noticed any particular reason during regular/hard use that would motivate me to want to try and install them. Simply might come down to a matter of preference.

Look what has arrived! Number 693.
I love it.
