im sure i know what you all will say, thats probably why im asking here :) im wanting to get a small fixed blade to try to carry on a regular basis (currently carry a spyderco persistence) and im liking the look and price of a bk14. id really like to carry it horizontally so i know that will either take some creativity on my part or a custom sheath. ive seen all you beckerhead folks on other parts of BF and never knew what all the numbers where about so i found my way over and this will be my first becker purchase

good idea or no?

ps if i make my own handle scales what kind of hardware do you use to hold em on? chicago screw? what size

Good Idea. Id give one of our local kydex benders a visit for scout carry.

Hell no. Steer clear of the BK14.
Get you an Izula or ESEE 3, they have a much better warranty.

And their sheaths won't dull the blade.

Betcha wasn't expecting that.

:D

+1 on the izula. I love mine... :D

I don't know if Moose is kidding or not, and I don't have a 14 to comment on, but if you're going to get an Izula, get the Izula II, the regular Izula is just too short in the handle. (I love my Izula II).

i kind of like the shorter blade of the izula (for how i intend to carry and use it) but i cant afford it!!!!!!!

An izula without the kit will run you about $40-45 where as the 14 is about $35-40. Honestly id say go with the izula if you can. If not the 14 is a great knife.

Izula is kind of short handle wise. I basically use mine with four fingers or choke up really high on the blade. Kinda dangerous, but, it's still a nice knife. Just get a Izula 2.

BK14 not good idea, great idea!

BK-14 is so much better than the izula. I mean seriously, it isn't even close. Ridiculous, absolutely freakin' ridiculous.

Bonfire lit! Now go. :D

p.s.
I gotta put a word in for "the710" on kydex. His work is really excellent and his service is outstanding.
My 2¢

Rogue Bowie, are those scales commercially available?

Doc

They are actually just the orange Ka-Bar zytel scales that you can buy off of Tomars or other online dealers that I soaked in some dark green RIT dye, gave them that smoky look. Make sure you put detergent AND a bunch of salt in the mix if you want them to look like mine as that's what I did. Bit of a happy accident to be honest :)

Here's the thread, might be a few more details on the process in there I think.

I took the file on my leatherman too the inside of the sheath where the edge goes to prevent it from dulling the blade. That they continue to use GFN is just kinda annoying. If it costs that much more to make it from kydex or whatever than charge and extra $10 so I don't have to spend $20-30 getting one made.

Aside from the sheath I love my BK14 after doing a cord wrap to make it fill my hand.

To be honest, I love my 11 and my 14. I have gifted both of them to several folks and they love them too. I got both my brother and sister carrying a 14 now.

If you're looking to horizontal carry it really isn't that hard, I just did a fairly basic braid on the sheath (they don't use GFN anymore so that took care of the dulling) and run my belt through the braid.
IF you're still worried about dulling, you can take a SMALL strip of leather, and force it down in there, or you can put pressure onto the back of the sheath so the edge doesn't make contact with the sheath, or you can file down the sheath.

I honestly don't think you will begrudge getting one of these knives.
