BK16 Kydex Sheath - Mark III

Great Pics and Ideas here!

I am stull figuring out what I want my BK-16 setup to be. I spend a fair amount of time in water-especially when I am flyfishing, and I cant decide if I want to strip the epoxy finish or not on my 16, as I like the protection of the finish to help prevent rust). Here is my blade along with a sheath I got from a place called "apocalypse gear". I am really pleased with it and it came with a detachable tek-lok , a firesteel and sleeve, and a small maxpedition pouch that attaches using Velcro straps. Here is the "naked" sheath w blade.

Nice sheath Derek! I'm going to have to try that out!
I am terrible at making those drainage holes... Looks like a far superior design. I think it may even be TOO advanced for our civilization...:D

Thanks Matthew, I am very pleased with how it turned out. I think it is hands down the best looking sheath I have made yet.

Nice job !!!

Is that a 1/2" x 5" fire steel ???

Yes sir, it sure is.

That's a really great set-up. Nice kydex ideas and work.

Thanks for making me feel inadequate.....again.

Aw, thanks. I do what I can. ;)

To everyone else, thanks for all the kind words. I'm hoping Pointy will get his pics up here and maybe show off his sheath too.

good stuff, derek! i assume the kydex is 0.080" so you used eyelets for 0.090" or even longer than that?

No sir, those are the ones for the .090", and that is .090" kydex, but my arbor press and some gumption compressed them down enough to work. Whereas usually they stick out a little afterwards these are completely flat and ever so slightly embedded into the kydex.

Well you didn't birth the idea, but I'd say you perfected the execution of it. I know how you over analyze and sweat the small stuff so I'm sure it's Beckerhead worthy. Can't wait to see it at the Gathering, maybe I'll remember this one!

A day late and a buck short to the party as usual...

I am having a fight with my camera to get it to give up the pics, once I prevail at prying the images from its alligator-like jaws; I will post them as well.

For now, just let me say that the Mk. III is suh-weet. The retention is insane, the snap is resonating, and the fit is crazy good. I guess that's what happens when you go all OCD on a simple project and take it thru several revisions... or something that sounds equally fancy. It's the best compliment I've yet found for the fistful of awesome that is the Bk-16.

ETA Pics:

Sloppy workspace pics, and I'm not averse to baking the kydex in the toaster :D

A pre-grinder retention test.

same test, good look at what I've termed the "air-welt"

Post grind mockup before the eyelets, the one on top fits FFG, the bottom one (2 pieces here) fits sabre.

Here they are, just needing finish sanding and thumb flares, along with a quickie coyote brown Taco we made.

Thanks Pointy! Glad we got to show off the insanity that is our OCD.

Out of curiosity, would anyone actually be interested in these if they were available for purchase?

That looks like the sheath I've been waiting for, I would jump on one! Incidentally, do you have the dimensions on those sheaths, I ordered a maxped strobe/GPS/compass molle pouch. Just big enough for a metal tin I have, would like to attach pouch to sheath.

Some very nice work here. Like the attention to detail. Seems like making a revision after some consistent use and carry is a great for a sheath to evolve and improve. Cross draw or scout carry?

Width is probably around 2.75", length, I have no idea, I left the sheath at home today (I was in a hurry this morning and forgot to toss it into my day pack) but it does fit the Maxped Volta pouch perfectly as far as length is concerned so somewhere around 5" or so.

Thanks! This was what I had wanted to do originally, but lacked the experience with Kydex to jump straight into this style, so I wanted to make sure I had some experience under my belt before I gave it a shot. I carry it cross draw but for a lefty even though I am a righty. I find that since my right is more dextrous than my left, I can pull the blade out backwards easier with my right than I can with my left and reverse it single handed, so it ends up working out well this way as far as being accessible for either hand. I could easily switch it though, and since I have the sheath right where I want it I am going to start working on phase 2 of my evil plan and start getting one setup for a drop leg setup.

If people would be interested in me making these let me know, I'm still on the fence about it.

Measured last night. 2.75" by 5.5", with the flat area being right around 5"

Very nice setup, I would love something like this for my 15. I was looking and found some colored washers, matching liners with spacer color would look sweet... http://erthenvar.com/store/m25washer

Would be very interested in something like this....

That is actually something we had been considering as an additional option. I'll keep everyone posted on what we decide on doing. BK15 might not be an immediate option if we do go forward. But eventually...

Nice jobs Derek and Pointy,

Makes me almost want to go plastic away from leather.

Fact is I'd be looking hard at your designs if the job required long term wet/humid location work.

Had all the goodies off the sheath today to mess around with another project and figured I would toss up a few more pics of the sheath without all that stuff on it.
