I took this pic over the steering wheel of the mower yesterday.

That's his head on the left side, if you can't tell.
Good thing I was paying attention.

Fact is that from the beginning of man’s sinful nature there has been a hate between man and serpent. Bible even says that we shall crush his head and he shall bruise or heal (not exact wording).

I am a man, my nature is to conquer, and so I do.

Saddest and lamest post thus far.

I've said my piece on this topic already, so I won't go into it anymore, but I have to say - I like the fact that we (as a group) can disagree on something and still keep it civil. Aside from a few semi-snarky comments, this has been a reasonable discussion. I hope we can maintain that...

Hey guys.... We don't all have to think alike. Some people hunt, some people are dead set against killing any animal, for any reason. Whatever works for you. Lets keep the holier than thou stuff outta here.

You want to kiss a snake? Fine. Kill a snake? Fine. How about we go back to discussing something we ALL agree on, which is Becker knives?

I am the king of my domain. If an unwelcome animal is in it, I will decide what to do with it. If you wander into a grizzly bears territory, it isn't going to shoo you out of it with a broom, it's going to bite your ****ing head off. Thats the world we live in. It' isn't always pretty. Snakes eat mice. Maybe I like mice more? We are, after all, both on Team Mammal.

Someone found a snake in his house and whacked him with a knife. If I found a PERSON in my house that didn't belong there, he'd get up to 17 Hornady Critical Defense hollow points in him. And thats a human being. I respect everyones own soverignty on how they deal with their own territory. Thats not the same as going into the snakes territory, ie, the wildnerness, and killing indiscriminantly, which I wouldn't do. Personally, I live my own life as I see fit, and I could give a rats ass who agrees with it or not. If someone wants to cuddle a snake, I'm not going to tell you you are wrong. Thats your business.

I'm surprised Moose has let this Beckerless time bomb go on as long as it has.

This is what most folks call a "black snake" it's actually a Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta); an excellent Rodent exterminator and 100% completely harmless. I found this one while hiking the Blue Ridge parkway:

Since someone else mentioned it, this is a Texas Indigo Snake found only in S. Texas, no where near the posters location. I found this one while out and about in far S. Texas and yes completely harmless and endangered:

I do snake removals locally and often come to a house where the (mostly harmless) snake has already met it's demise at the hands of a terrified home owner. I don't chew them out or belittle them. I just try and educate them. Fear of snake has been engrained in people so long that it's hard to get rid of but belittling them definitely doesn't help. This was a recent "snake removal" I went to:

as you can see, the snake is wearing his anus for a hat thanks to a terrified ranch owner. Unfortunately, the snake was a completely harmless Milk snake which occasionally dines on venomous snakes and it's fairly rare to boot. When I asked him why he killed it knowing I was going to be there in 5 minutes, he replied, "well it's a snake and I didn't want anyone to get bit" I've since taken him a live milk snake and let him handle it. He liked it so much that he actually went out and bought an aquarium and keeps one in his living room. So no, I don't fault the poster for killing the snake; people do that when they're scared, but I'd like to see folks learn about them so next time, one is found, they'd pick it up and toss it outside. Black Ratsnakes can get pissy when cornered and will bite but their bite is harmless (I've been bitten many, many times removing them).

Off topic, but I like most snakes better than most people.

With all due respect, Moose isn't the only one who wears red in this sub-forum and the thread isn't entirely Beckerless - the offending snake in question was dispatched with a BK2 (it never stood a chance!).

As for me, if I don't like where a thread is going, I simply choose not to read it any further. Seems simple enough...

All true. But we're a looooong way from the BK2, and this is becoming a polarizing issue based on individual ethics and judging others on theirs. These threads never end well. I like happy-Becker threads with shiny, happy 1095cv steel and custom handles.

I don't see this as people passing judgement,

...I see it as people passing on information.

I think most Beckerheads appreciate nature and our environment,

...talking about a subject like this is a good form of education.

Forty years ago I was one on those snake killers,

...today I know better.

I think we all realize that mankind has not been the best Shepard to our planet,

...Beckerheads like us are needed to spread the word.

I cannot argue this point! And I hope you know that I did not mean any disrespect at all, and that I have nuthin' but love for my Becker brethren...

Well, there is a reason for that.

For the better part of my life, I've been afraid of snakes. Well, not really afraid, but with a bitter dislike to be in close proximity to.

Since we started the thread with a BK2 dispatching a snake, its a valid post.

Now, we did deviate from the original topic of BK2 vs. Snake, somewhat.

I've gotten over my aversion to snakes. I made a point get over it. Now, I'm not gonna go rollin' around in a pit of no shoulders, but I don't freak out when I see them or come into contact with them.

With knives like my BK2 or BK9 or BK17 at my side, snake dispatchment is quite easy, and humane. Even my 561 can get the job done.

I've had to teach folks how to kill and eat a snake, and living in West Texas for years, I've had me plenty o' rattlesnake on the grill. It does taste quite good.

The way I kill them, I get me about a 3' long stick, pin the snakes head down with the stick in my left hand, my blade in the right, then simply cut the snakes head past the stick, towards the head. Hold the body down as best you can, while it finishes its death throes.

Job done, neat and humane.

To move snakes around with my BK2 or BK9 or BK17, the job is just as simple, use my knife to cut me a stick about 3' long. I look for a branch with about as big around as my thumb, with a V in it, cut below the V and then cut back one side of the V to make jacked up looking J.

Hook the snake under the head, about 3" behind the head, grab the tail and lift in unison. If its not venomous, I just reach down and grab them behind the head, and pick them up, ta hell with a stick.

They feel quite horrible in the hand. I think I would deal with it better if they were slimy, instead of that dry leaf feel.

Anyways, I appreciate all of natures creatures, but I also understand that sometimes things have to die. Either to suit my needs or to suit my wants. We don't think twice about swatting a mosquito on our arm, or bashing a fly with a magazine, but when someone kills something larger, its soooooooo bad.

A life is a life, no matter how small or large, taking it shouldn't worse for one and not another. Since I have no problem killing a mosquito, I have no problem killing a deer, or anything in between those two, or beyond. Death is just a matter of living.

Anyone that thinks an animal won't die in nature, doesn't spend time there, and if I claim its life, its no different than a bird of prey swooping down and taking back to be snacked upon by a nest of birdies.

Most times if I kill a venomous snake in my yard, its to protect my children, who spend alot of time there, and are not paying attention looking at the ground for snakes.

I make sure their bodies will be consumed by something else, as nourishment, and so far, every snake I have killed in my yard, what ever has ate it, doesn't even leave behind a snake skin.

I'll close this thread, mostly because the request has been made. If anyone has any objections, feel free to PM or email about it.

Colonel, the best advice as to the merit of your decision has been made, your house, your rules. I am a firm believer in that.

As to the best way to move a snake, the best way is CAREFULLY. Gloves, tongs, sticks, or LEO, the best way is whichever you wish and the safest.
