BK2 replacement sheath question (NO GLASS)

I received my replacement sheath from KaBar today (previous one was broken, and I had a thread about how to carry the BK2 scout style because of it). The knife retention strap was broken (more specifically, the button), and the sheath dulls the knife on half of the blade.

I informed KaBar about both of the problems, and after about 11 business days, the new sheath came, and everything about it appears to be fine. I was about to throw out the packaging, when I noticed something interesting on the packing slip.

Check this out.

Notice how it says "NEW SHEATH WITHOUT GLASS".

The reason that I am asking this is because I know that normally the sheath for the BK2 is glass filled plastic of some sort (right?). I read somewhere that people were thinking that the reason that the sheaths were dulling the blade, was because of the glass fibers in the plastic. If the normal sheaths have them, and the people that report problems with them do not, then this appears to have been a very true theory.

The question I have is does KaBar ship out different sheaths without glass in it for people that request them? Or am I just incompetent and didn't know that all of the sheaths were like this?

I'm not worried about it at all (meaning, not worried that something is wrong, and that the sheath is "defective" again), but I thought that this might be an interesting discovery if no one else had noticed it yet.

Ditto, quite curious to hear about this. I really like the stock BK2 sheath, minus the floppy nylon belt loop, but that's an easy fix anyways.

Glad you guys were intrigued as well.

And honestly, I'm just glad I'm not being mocked ;).

I can't get over if Ka Bar has replacements handy why don't they just sell those instead of the other ones. Does it look the same? New or old BK2 sheath? Pics?

I'm interested.
Have you tested it?
Did you see the virtuovice video? do you need a link?

Whereismyclock - This is a second gen BK2 sheath. Visually, it looks identical to the sheath that I received with the knife (Second Gen BK2 with extended tang).

My other BK2 sheath is covered with para cord, and I'm not going to remove it all (would take up WAY too long), but I'll see if I can't get a good photo of the two tomorrow sometime. But honestly, I don't think there are any visual differences.

Slapper - I have no idea what you are talking about, so I guess I'll need a link.

It will be interesting what the other guys have to say about this. Like I said, its not a big deal to me functionally, I just find it really intriguing.

Sorry I can't offer any insight for your question. I'm really just curious as well. I'll sit here quietly in the corner till Moose, Bladite or Guyon come satisfy our curiosity.

Wow, sounds interesting. Could you test the sheath, i.e. sharpen the knife, check sharpness, draw it over the edge of the sheath a few times and then test the sharpness again?

You got my attention, love to see your tests on the sheath if it will dull the blade. I am keen to know if it Kabar have resolved this issue. How can we know which knives are fitted with good sheaths? :)

What? Ya'll said the glass filled nylon sheaths dulled the edge. You think Kabar was just gonna sit back and say, "Tough it out?" "Deal with it?". Naw, they fix problems when the arise, here's an example of said fix.

I didn't know they were already here, but I knew they were coming.

I wonder if there is a way to order one. I like the gen2 sheath, but don't use it simply because of the dulling issue.

Is this fix coming for the EsKabar sheaths as well? Despite taking great care when I draw the knife to keep the spine against the back of the sheath, it's still dulling the edge. Seems some have this issue, some don't. My sheath is one of the newer style more designed for the EsKabar blade shape, but still dulling. So I'm assuming these still have the glass in them just like the old tanto style ones. It's a shame because it's such a great knife. I honestly like the sheath design, but the edge dulling renders everything kinda useless.

Toooj will have to weigh in on it, but I know that he wants all the GRN sheaths taken to just injected plastic, so, I would venture a guess to say yeah, they will be fixed as well.

As far as ordering one, I would say, contact Kabar, and see what they say. If ya'll want me to, I will ask on Monday.

Please do ask, there are several of us that would love to pick up a replacement, especially for the 2, 11, and 14's.
