BK2 Vs. Shrade SCHF9!!

tfields, thanks for the review. Unlike you it would be easy for me to choose a favorite to carry and that would be the BK-2 because it is US made and Ka-Bar's 1095CroVan is better than any other 1095 in my opinion because it is tough as hell like 1095 is supposed to be but with the added chromium and vanadium also has a level of corrosion resistance that other 1095 steels do not.

The back story behind the SCHF9 design is that I am a major fan of the old Schrades and Old Timers. I have an old 185OT Woodsman that was my favorite knife when I bought my first one over thirty years ago. I bought one of the new hollow handled Schrades and put it through hell and did a review. There was soooo much flack over it being a near copy of the CRK Project I (which I've never owned and had never seen) that I was talking to Morgan Taylor and mentioned them actually designing a knife of their own that would really stand up to the "Extreme Survival" they were writing on the blades of their Extreme Survival line. Because a lot of the knives in that line were very very similar to other designs on the market and in my opinion the 420J steel they were using in some of them wouldn't hold up to extremes. He asked me what knife I'd design for an extreme survival situation in a wilderness environment. I sent him a sketch of the knife that later became the SCHF9 as an example of what I would want in that situation. A knife design that built heavy enough that it could handle abuse, with multi-position grip for versatility, and a blade geometry that worked fairly well for both slicing and chopping...as well as sticking if needs be. He liked the design and offered to buy it immediately and pay me to design a few more. BUT I was so adamant about the 1095 steel and it not being made in main land China, factors which apparently significantly raised production costs, that the other designs were put off till a future date.

They stayed true to the design drawings, which that grind may not have been easy. So far all of them I have handled have come with a sharp edge, and the heat treat of all I have tested has done pretty well. I asked for an RC no higher than 57 and no lower than 55...shooting for 56...so it could easily be maintained using a stone in a wilderness environment. I've seen one review where the reviewer inadvertently stabbed and chopped the knife into the rock he was using for a chopping block with little deformation of the steel.

Would it be a better knife if made by Ka-Bar? Duh, obviously. Are there going to be bad ones out there, of course it's mass produced in high quantities. Even Ka-Bar with their high QC standards has experienced inclusions.

Hmm. So just from what I have seen from both of them, if you had to stick something, the Schrade would be better at that right? :D

It was designed with these thoughts in mind...as well as getting it back out if it become hung up in bone or cartilage.

thx for the back story mistwalker thats cool. and i guess really i like american made as well no doubt the becker steel is better and keep on designing knives i think you did a great job on this one without a doubt!!! i love this bk2 lol its growing on me fast.

No! BK9 would be better :D

I guess everyone has their own view of things...but it was the 9 not being pointy enough to suit me that prompted me to pass it on to a friend. It was a fantastic chopper...went through 7 inches of seasoned white pine in under six minutes...just not pointy enough for me. I wouldn't want to wield one facing multiple opponents in CQC, much rather have my 7, which spoiled me point wise as far as Beckers go.

Thanks Mistwalker! It's so awesome to be able to talk to the designer of a blade about it! Glad you had your input. I have had a bk2(blackjack version) and I like to have a knife I can also lash to a spear or can stick something with it if need be, and that was the bk2's only downfall :P I think that we think alike, haha. Glad you kept that in mind too. I am definitely gonna be getting one as soon as I can get a little extra cash together. Thanks again!

yeah i thoght it was just really cool that mistwalker and ethan becker live so close too me kinda makes me feel like a psuedo celebetiy lol!!

I prefer the clip on the 9 over the 7 but I wouldnt want to face multiple opponents in close quarters combat with a knife period, but if i had to, id pick the 9. if the opponents had knives also they would likely be combat or fighting type of knives. the extra couple of inches the 9 has would give me a little more reach.

Get a few cantaloupes and watermelons and go stick them with the 7 and the 9. im sure they will both penetrate enough to do as much damage as needed.

But on subject nice review and comparison. i like the handle on the schf9

thx for the kind words about the review but its not that great lol. on the subject of stabbing melons invite me over if ya do then we can eat those dead combatants!!:)

Hey im in philly, anytime you want to come stab some stuff your welcome. Theres alot of idiots here!

Ill grab a few melons for practice first :)

WOW, you must live in a rough neighborhood.

Not anymore, but it was definitely a major, and permanent, influence on my thinking.

Sticking cantaloupes and water melons will tell you about as much about what it's like to stab a mammal as drinking hot chocolate will tell you about how coffee tastes.

If it penetrates the melons it will penetrate flesh.....yes?

I never stabbed a person but it would seem the outer core of a melon is tougher than skin.

But if im wrong let me know.

We can have an in depth conversation on the dynamics of it at the next gathering if you're there and would like. Till then just take a hard look at all of the knives purpose designed for stabbing through the years; fairbairn-sykes fighting knife, M-3 trench knife, M-7 Bayonet etc., etc., or even purpose designed for fighting and utility. The dynamics of penetrating a flesh and bone body and those of penetrating melons are quite different.

Yea i know the knifes designed for stabbing are different than those for cutting. my though process was a bk9 would penetrate a human body. both the 7 and 9 are considered combat knives. both have clip points the 7s clip is just longer than the 9s. im sure the 7 might stab better but i think the 9 would still work stabbing a person. not as clean as a bayonet obviously but i wasnt comparing it to all knives just the 9 to the 7. im no knife expert so id love a better conversation on the dynamics.

Thanks for the knowledgeable reply.

I dont think there are too many knives that wouldnt be able to penetrate flesh. You could probably stab someone with a spoon if you swung fast enough and hit the skin at the right angle.

My BK2 would whip that Schrades ass and make it cook a Benton Bacon Breakfast. Wearing a skirt.

USA, all the way.....

:D

ohh my a show down!!!! lol you mean cook the bacon with no shirt on right?

Not sure, my new BK2 isn't as kinky as the last 3.

Prolly just make it cook wearing a skirt and a black eye.

Schrade. Ha.
