BK20- Speculation on the 450 units

This is my attempt to focus speculation on Ka-Bar's statement that there will only be 450 BK20s available in one place so the subject can be addressed properly.

So far, thems that knows ain't telling what the future of this design is. There have been a number of folks already ready to fight if Ka-Bar makes them available in the future after this run sells out.

This might be a good time to remind folks of the old saying... " If you don't have anything nice to say... keep it to yourself." They have only been available a week for Pete's sake. It's not like Ka-Bar or Ethan have a reputation for dishonesty do they?

That being said, I think speculating on the future can be fun, and possibly constructive for Ka-Bar.

Personally, I hope a version of the BK20 will be available in the future for those that missed out on this deal. When KA-Bar says 450 units, I believe them until proven otherwise. I always appreciate the guys with a better mousetrap exploiting the idea to it's fullest financial extent. However, that does not mean they have to do it by misrepresenting their product or services.

I think something will be forthcoming from this design. It only makes business sense. I don't think it will be the exactly the same piece. I'm thinking that maybe when it reappears, it will be labeled Ka-Bar instead of Becker and may have cosmetic changes. Or, maybe it comes back with a different Becker number and is the same blade thickness as the 9.

Those are my two guesses. Jump in and add your own, but let's keep it positive. Ka-Bar and Ethan have made a great opportunity available and I think it's only fair to appreciate it.

Where's that dang brown truck???? ( Tapping foot anxiously)

There will only be 450 BK20's made and they are all boxed up and ready to go. Will not be sold separately. When they are gone they are gone for good.

Sounds to me like this is it, like Busse knives, once and done. If more are produced then this quoted statement would prove to be misleading.

It look's like they haven't even sold out yet ! People need to CHILL , if you want one get it while the gettin is good . The only thing I have a problem with is it's arrival wait !

Ethan did say this:

Please guys.... Personally I want them to make several million more...... I understand what you are saying but, if this is it then the royalty flow stops..... Lol..... It only makes sense for Ka-Bar to make smallish runs with designs that are unproven..... BTW..... The Twenty should have an MSRP of damn close to $200 bucks....Soooo...... You really are getting the 4&5 for damn close to free......

Ethan

They say they wont make anymore but, it would be a pretty silly business decision not to if they sell out fast. If many people want them I would bet they will make more down the line.

They arent serialized are they? That would be one thing but if not then they could build as many as they want. Maybe the 3 knife deal is limited due to inventory on hand.

Mine will be laser etched prototype ;)

I hope they sell out and it turns in to a successful production knife.

+1

I would like one but, its kind of bad timing as I just got a BK21 the day before yesterday and am about to order TKC scales for it. I will likely get some custom kydex for it as well. I also have absolutely no interest in the BK5. The BK4 I wouldnt mind but, my new BK21 is kind of like a BK4 on steroids so it is not a huge want of mine either. Between that and the lack of funds for a bit due to the BK21 and accessories, I wont be getting one unless it they make another run(I bet they will).

I agree. Ka-Bar replies have been swift and consistent in replying to the question - I bought two.

Kabar and (for sure!), Ethan, are to be trusted. Neither has ever done anything to have me question their ethics and, in the case of Ethan, his integrity has been without question for the test of time.

That said, I think KaBar would have done well to serialize the first run and I might even go so far as to say that the 4 and the 5 that are part of the package deal should all have the same number ... it would have made this special exponentially beyond the cost of doing it. If they decided never to go into another, larger, production run - so be it, but I think KaBat missed a marketing opportunity here.

If they were to make it a production knife then why would they state several times that they won't make any more.

Because Kabar is in business to make money. If there is a lot of demand for the BK20 they would be stupid not to make more imo. I think they might have underestimated the demand for this knife.

Then they should have said that there maybe future production runs depending on demand but they didn't.

I for one will be pushing the powers that be to make more...... Probably a lost cause.... If they do make more blame me not them...... Look guys you first responders got a hell of a lot of cutlery for two hundred bucks...... I repeat, the BK20 should be MSRP at about two hundred. ......So you got two great knives for damn close to free...... You guys got the good deal on the front end......., I get to pay retail on this one and I am damned happy to get the extra steel "FREE"......

E

P.s...... I beg to point out that the Hoonglas thing which I regard as a fine blade, by the way, which has far less complexity has a full bore retail of over three hundred smackaroonies......

If it such big demand... Why aren't they sold out already?

Wise decision I say. Maybe another sprint run, maybe not...either way, I suspect this will never be a production Blade and only ever available direct...no dealers. Only time will tell, I'd love to see thousands of people with them , Ethan earned it and deserves royalties. But, if these are still available now, then what does that say? And...why does free stuff stop people from buying it? If anyone thinks it will ever be cheaper, they're missing out. It won't...

I agree. I dont really get why they made this knife a limited run really. They should have just made the box set a limited run imo. I think they will regret this decision when they see the demand for this knife. I bet they could have sold A LOT more then 450 of these. It should be part of their regular production imo. I bet it might have outsold the BK9 and some of their other models going forward really. O well, it is what it is. Maybe Mr. Becker could have Rowen make a batch of variants of this design like he did with the RSK MK2. I would rather one made by Rowen personally anyway as they make a superior knife to Kabar imo.
