BK21 Unboxing And Initial Impressions (UPDATED)

Dude, this thread is just what I was looking for! I did not find any curve to be learnt when I first got my bk4 from you. I'm just thinking the 21 will just be like a larger, beefier 4. Am I wrong in this assessment?

I felt there was a learning curve to the 4, compared to a more traditional blade. The 21 is extremely weight forward. I was finding it "hard" to understand. I probably didn't give it enough of a chance, tbh. Sometimes, when chopping a piece of wood, it would bite deep, then other times it would hit like a hammer, sending shock down my arm. Even when I was hitting the same part of the blade. It was kinda weird really. Ultimately, I guess I didn't see what it could do that a 9 couldn't. The 9 is my all time favorite blade, and my most used, so I tend to compare other blades to it. Why carry the extra weight, when a 9 does fine? That said, it is one bad ass looking blade, haha.

I know when I first held mine I felt scared to swing it  . The scales not because them being nylon because they are too thin and the knife having some weight you need to be able to grip it haha  . Had Joe at Lmf knives add liners too his micarta no bs it made a world of difference to the grip . Now it feels perfect ;)

I think you also need a thicker handle :p Hahaha for sure I think it would have made the knife swing straight and not twist . Your big paws need more girth on the heavier blades :D

The BK21 should be at least better at chopping I would say..
Not only because of having more blade length, also the kukri/kopis shape of the blade which excels in chopping motions (they chop above their size). Much more impact.
Maybe it's not for everyone. The shape. Some experience it as weird. I like the shape though. Might getting the BK21 soon.

Great pics btw.
Very nicely done

I probably should get another 21, and give it more o a go. That's one thing about a straight blade, compared to a recurve. Practically no matter where the blade hits the wood at, it chops, versus having to hit the right spot on the blade every time.

Bladite was having the same problems I was having. You'll have to read through the thread to find his postings. He's a known kukri freakicanus.

Thanks about the pics. I put a lot of effort into my photos.

Dubs, I'm gonna be back up in your neck of the woods beginning of next month, if you wanna borrow my 21 and see if you like it any better (and beat the snot out of it for a while?) before you drop the money to buy one again?

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'm just going to get another, and reprofile the edge. Not sure though, Bladite said in this thread that he convexed his, and it didn't do much good. I think I just have a lot to learn about kukris. I need to give the boss man a call and discuss this blade with him.

It depends a lot on what you want to do with it. I've had in depth discussions with the ite of blades about this blade. It's great for "soft targets" or for small or soft woods. For big dense hard woods its not as good. It's sweet spot is about the middle third of the back of the forward section... If that makes sense. Although for bamboo the front part is great cause it moves so fast.

I will add that the proto that Jerry Fisk convexed hit a lot harder and bit down deeper than the factory model with factory edge.
A good high convexed edge makes a huge difference on some of these larger knives in my opinion.

i hopefully said the factory edge was underwhelming, but a deep convex made it more of a user as god intended (Mr Reinhardt)... turns it into a pretty good whippy slashing machine...
