BK21 Unboxing And Initial Impressions (UPDATED)

I will add that the proto that Jerry Fisk convexed hit a lot harder and bit down deeper than the factory model with factory edge.
A good high convexed edge makes a huge difference on some of these larger knives in my opinion.

if only you could try the original hard chrome :D

the second model after that... with the parkerized coating... not convexed, but good. convex that and its godly.

the KaBar BK4 is not "the MachAx"... more the pity.
I really like the 4 it's as close as I will most likely get to a real Machax  No complaints here :D the 21 with what little time I've used it , seems like it's going to be a very fun blade. Looking forward to more time with the 21 :)

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'm just going to get another, and reprofile the edge. Not sure though, Bladite said in this thread that he convexed his, and it didn't do much good. I think I just have a lot to learn about kukris. I need to give the boss man a call and discuss this blade with him.

I modded the handle on mine for a more comfortable grip -- haven't decided if it needs liners as well.
if you want to give it a go, drop me a line.

I know by adding liners I truly like the 21. It's like a hammer you want it to land on the nail head every time if the knife is turning and twisting in your hand cause it's to thin it's not going to hit where you want every time . Blades as heavy as the 21 need to fill your hand if you want it to hit where you want it. On the sweet spot , I feel sorry for anything it hits between the tip to 1" past Hank's last name.

This thread has been focused on chopping wood, but I've started reading Mr. Reinhardt's book on knife fighting and he preferred kukris for fighting. He said something to the effect that they bring the power up to a level that you could actually remove hands and limbs! For y'all that have used one, how would you rate it as a defensive weapon? I wondered about the weight, how it would maneuver? For Mr. Reinhardt to prefer it over others, it must be pretty special!

I believe it was Ethan that said once, that someone removed a deer head in a single blow with one. Doesn't really answer your question, I know.

Good to know, now I would feel safer around angry deer if I had one! :) Guess I am still wondering about its use on angry people....
I know, right? Gotta watch those sly, evil, unpredictable deer, haha.

I've always wondered that about these big knives like the 21,20,9, and 29. Like what would happen if you took a good swing at a intruders arm. Would it ricochet off the bone, get stuck in the bone, or go right through? What about a the top of the skull? Or are all of these too small and light so your best bet would be to stab?
Now a knife would be a pretty poor home defense weapon compared to a gun, but I've wondered what it could actually do in a pinch.

A serious subject, but I had to smile for some reason thinking about whacking some crook in the arm and the blade stuck....talk about an oh sh*t moment! Would you try to pull it out like you would from a stump or run from the guy with the BK 9 attached to his arm? My face would look like Wile E Coyote just before he drop off the cliff. Haha!

Imagine the police's reaction when they show up and see the crook laying there with 3 Becker knives stuck to his arm. "Well officer, I took a swipe at him only for the blade to get stuck. So I pulled out a second knife just for the same thing to happen. It happened again on the third, but by then I figured he wasn't going anywhere fast so I called you guys".

I did find one news article that talked about the subject, but it was the skull.
https://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/knife-stuck-head-after-party-stabbing
"The knife was "very strongly" stuck in the bone in the man's head because it was one of the thicker bones that composed the skull, he said.

"It was like being embedded in a piece of wood."

It was stuck so firmly, Mr Snape had to make the wound slightly wider in order to slide the knife out."

Anyways, back on subject. The 21 looks interesting, but I just spent my budget on the 29 deal. How much better at chopping and clearing away brush is this compared to a cheaper cold steel kukhri machete or something similar? I imagine this will be more durable and comfortable, but how much more effective is it?
