BK24 Beatdown Part 1

hickory, the test material of choice for the fabled creator of the original Bowie knife, Samuel Black. It has been said that a knife made by him that would not shave hair after an hour of whittling hickory would be thrown away. The question is- does the 24 pass the test?
I'm with you, Moose. I keep factory edge for the first few days, then sharpen myself- 'cuz most manufacturers don't sharpen to as fine of an edge as I like. I prefer an almost mirror polish on most knives.

Didn't whittle for an hour. Maybe 10 minutes. The branch, IMO, fit the blade. Consider it done quite a bit of cross grain batonning, more to test the D2 to see if it would chip, several knots, and so on.

I think the knife lives up to the toughness of its predecessor.

Very nice Moose! It might be my eyes but this looks to be a little thicker than the BK14... can you check laying them flat or with calipers?

Thanks,

Eli

They are the same. 5/32" approx. .165 or so.

Moose, how would you compare this Ka-bar D2 to the original Camillus D2 BK11?

Interesting question, first time I've been asked.

Lemme think about it some, its been a while since I've held one.

I didn't even know there was a D2 BK11.

I think they did a sprint run in some kind of steel for AG Russell. I don't know if it was D2 or if it was something else I'm thinking of. I gotta talk to Gibbs and Ethan to confirm.

I've seen some BK11's made from different steels before, and I'll be honest, I thought I saw a proto in S30V, but I could be wrong.

Stand by, I gotta to to work today, but I'll see what I can find out.

If we can get Gibbs on here to confirm, that would be the final word in the matter.

Daiz, you got some pikturs?

Gotcha. Looking forward to the response. Interesting...

Moose-

What angle did you sharpen that 24 to? Did you use the KME sharpener?

Pretty impressive test!

I jut got a Bk24 a few weeks ago and it is a sweet knife, REALLY liking the D2 steel. I have stropped mine A LOT an it takes a very fine edge and holds it well. I am intersted in picking up a KME sharpener but not sure what the ideal angle for this knife would be. Can you go to a steeper angle due to the qualities of the D2 steel and still get good long term edge holding?

thanks-

Drew

P.S. where is Part 2!?!?! :)

Great field-test Moose! The pics are excellent also. Thanks for doing this and posting. I LOVE my 14, it's now my EDC in a leather sheath made by our very own PSYOP.

50 degrees inclusive, and yeah, did it on the KME.

Part 2 was the salt water test. I didn't want to do another thread, so, I just added to the first post.

Thanks for the reply. I didnt think the KME would go beyond 30 deg for some reason. and I am going to have to look up and figure out what "inclusive" means. Im a noob....

Thanks!

Thanks!

50 degrees inclusive is 25 on each side.

KME will do 30 per side. Taking it up to a 60 inclusive. Inclusive just means per side. I normally keep mine at about 17 per side (34 inclusive) but I am thinking after this I might take my 24 up to a 25 per. I never even thought to ask that.
