We're going to have a passaround with a Magnum Camp supplied by KabBar!

We have rules!
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7777618&postcount=7
read them...

Make sure you are eligible! Then sign up by posting "I'm in" AND send me via EMAIL, the contact information the rules require, what Beckers you own, and that you agree to the rules.

I'll take the entries, and if there are more than say, 20, I'll randomly select from the pool, and post the master list of names, and ... all that.

Entry selection will close by 2010-11-15 9pm Eastern time to be fair to all the day walker and night workers and weekenders and general undead; then this thread will close, and a new one will be born...

This is the first big passaround here, so there may be some glitches, so bear with the management :)

Go

Well, it's only USA residents... Sorry to hear that. :(
There have been passarounds where Canadians were allowed to participate.
What can I say...?

Don't worry, brother, there will be other passaround that covers Canada, promise. Moose

sorry about that. in setting up the rules for the first Becker passaround, wanted to keep it very simple, avoid customs issues (like huge surcharges), potential loss, all that - my experience shipping to Canada and Europe is about 50/50 in terms of having issues. didn't want to risk this first one.

as for other passarounds, i have no knowledge of what they did, or their rules (barring the fact i borrowed from ESEE's rules, and they only ship within USA too)

i've extended the signup until Monday evening and then i'll take what i got. doesn't look like a problem with overflow ;)

hopefully one of you will have it for turkey carving - with pictures!

i'll be posting my review shortly - just back from some bushwhacking, and will do some kitchen prep tonite. pictures!

I'm . . . not in. Since, eventually, I plan to get one anyway, I'd rather leave a spot open for someone else. Sure, I'd like to try it, but — at the moment — I can't get out to give it the workout it deserves.

By the time the Tweeners come out though (yeah, yeah, I know it'll be awhile), I should be ready to rock. Then I'd certainly be in for a pass around.

coming along... still not up to 20, but if that's what it is, well then :>

i'll be bundling up the MC shortly, with a printed list of addresses and sending it out shortly.

if you are lucking and get it on T-day, we expect carving pictures ;) *gobble gobble*

i'll also soon start a review thread with what i've done, pictures/etc and get the ball rolling

the knife is boxed, and shipped to #2 on the list: wildmanh, maybe by Caturday via USPS!

post when it arrives, and of course, the mayhem involved with testing. i need to get my report typed up :)

okay. here's my little review of the Magnum Camp that Toooj was so kind as to send out for us to mess with.

first off, we got a Becker on a Peckery:

i went around my "primitive arts area" and was taking free hand draw swipes as best i could on various shrubs and what not with the factory edge. cuts were pretty darn clean i think yes?

then for laugh, i used some of the green wood to practice some semi-fuzz sticks:

then found another stick, thicker than my thumb, and gave it a chop against a solid backstop:

hey, check it out, a 3.5 inch thick seasoned hard-as-rock fallen oak sapling:

lets chop it!

extracted this bit of log, representing two complete chop throughs on the log. hard, seasoned read oak. hard wood. took SOME effort i will say:

no action shots of the batoning, but i then turned the log into little pieces suitable for a fire, or traps, or what not... turns out the narrow spine on the MC beats up the baton a bit, you'll want a good fresh green baton ideally, so it doesn't break (like my samples did), and heavier than the snow stake i was using there, note the dents in the wood. knife? held up fine:

cleaned up Magnum Camp vs a Magnum Pistol for laughs: the knife is merely 2 ounces less than the pistol (KelTec PMR-30) - go figure:

now, in the kitchen, some slicing tests on a persimmon and a plum:

1096331438_29HyA-XL.jpg

that's THIN baby: beautiful thin slices. at no time have i touched up the factory edge!

and now some lamb, yeah, the knife got washed after the woods test ;)

so, overall, nothing too outrageous for camp chores. cutting brush and general "machete" duty was pretty easy. it's a fast thin knife and was cutting grass and small things pretty well. blackberry plants for the most part gave it up, but some of last year's stuff took a couple whacks to get some bite. it's not quite designed for that task as would be a small brush hook, but the job got done.

chopping the hard oak log was possible, but i wouldn't want to do it all the time, as it's just not efficient, so yes, if you have to, you can. i'd be used a forest axe or something like that instead, and perhaps a Campanion or Tac-Tul for batoning if i had a choice - i generally don't like splitting much with my fine axe as i consider that "blunt work"... batoning with the MC is very possible, even with seasoned wood, but i would take off smaller pieces/rounds instead of attempting a 1/2 split... think smart, go for the easy edges...

the kitchen work, even after the chopping and splitting, was a breeze. knife cleaned up well, and slicing was brilliant. i was tempted to sharpen it up, but i'll leave that for the next person to do if they HAVE to, as it is, the edge has plenty of life to it, and it would be interesting to see it dulled some more.

deboning the lamb skewers was pretty easy, and there's good feedback. good kitchen knife. lots of play, and it slid right into the bone and cut cleanly. can't ask for more than that.

and that's about that.

next!
