BK5 - Magnum Camp Passround (was Thread Signup)

My first video review. Filmed with an iPod Touch. The quality turned out a lot worse than I expected. If you ever met me, you wouldn't think that I would be as nervous talking on camera as I was doing this . Enjoy.

actually, it's not all that bad. i've seen worse. even today. trust me ;)

okay, i think this pass around is close to done.

sqoon - i'm going to check in with Toooj come Monday, or ASAP, so don't go mailing that off yet :) he might have ... iDears, ya know? yes terrible iDears.

so, keep testing it in the meantime. take pictures.

all the rest of youse-guys, please write up a follow few paragraphs describing what you liked, what you didn't... all that. post here.

then, we shall see what we shall see!

we'll have to get a couple more pass-arounds going.

I've been thinking about purchasing a BK5 but just always forget about it :o

How do I get put on the list, I would love to try it out before hand...

Follow-up thoughts.
I liked how light the blade was.
I loved the continuous curve on the belly.
I prefer a bit of drop to the tip, not the upsweep past the centerline of the BK5 -- but I understand the thought process behind the shape. it's a food prep knife and brings to my mind the shape of a cimeter-style carver.
I was not so fond of having the balance point in my hand - as a cooking knife this is a great thing, but for a camp/chore knife, a balance in front of the scales is preferable to me.
I appreciated the wide & shallow choil for choking up on the blade when doing finer work, and I really like the extended tang on the current generation Beckers.
It would also be nice if the spine of the blade could be left at full thickness to a point about 1" in front of the choil - again for when I'm choking up on the blade.

Not bad at all! Thanks!
(Although, I was expecting some action shots as well. :D)

What do you guys think about this knife as a companion to a BK2 for general camping use as opposed to a BK7 or BK9? Thanks.

well, there's little the BK5 can't do that the BK7 can, and in those cases, esp more rugged batoning or chopping or prying, the BK2 takes over. relatively light comboo, and a small axe would complete the set nicely. possibly a saw.

the BK5 is just so darn PLEASANT to use :) i like it lots. my Camillus user has done a lot of duty, but i'm retiring it for the KaBar version(s) because it sings.

yippy kai yay

Thanks again, I appreciate your response. I'm looking forward to enjoying these knives.:)

Today was a two-knife day for me. Got the BK5 and a Case stockman with yellow delrin handles. Lots to play with. Thinking about making a video for the BK5 as this thread is lacking in them and youtube has only one.

okay, Toooj says to send the blade to him as the last recipient in the passaround, so when you get to it, let us know.

then he'll evaluate the thing to see what we did to it/etc

good stuff

where that knife at? confess!

'Tis on it's way back to Tooj. Sorry. I've been fending off a mean stomach flu :barf: so I have not been on much lately.

i'll make sure Toooj washes it in solvent first :)

get better!

pictures!

pictures!

Sorry, no pics. It's your pretty standard, garden variety puke and diar... Oh. Yeah. The knife. The vid was all I got. I did some chopping with it before I sent it off. I was really surprised with how well it chopped, in that it was capable and not a total slouch.

All,

I have the pass around knife in my possession...and I'm disappointed; I thought it would come back REALLY beatup. You guys were too nice to the MC...or maybe you guys did brutalize it and it took the beating like a real Becker should.
Hey, who polished the edge? Nice job.
In any event, I'm done with my inspection and the pass around knife is winging it's way back to Bladite.
He has been instructed to randomly pick a name of one of the testers and send it to that person.
Thanks for testing the blade.

Never Too Sharp put that edge on it. I tried to ruin it for you. Honest, I tried. I went through some green pine (the hardest wood known to man) and even went through some knots with no problem. The knife chops and batons a lot better than I thought. Send it back and I'll F it up real good for ya!
