BK7 durability concern

A few of got together and placed an order for some Companions and Combat Bowies as well as a few neck knives that are going to CSM Carlson's troups in Iraq (See sticky in General). I got the last 4 Companions the folks had and was hoping to get nine so I filled out the rest of the order with the bowies.

My bet is that they will stand up to a lot of reasonable use, but this batch is heading to Iraq. We'll see, but I think they will be happy with them. I sure am impressed - lots of knife for the buck.

i may have to try just that, akabu.any ideas about water proof containers that will fit the bk7 sheath?

Gutsy ,there is a small waterproof latch top plastic case that is sold at marine supply store's I use for personal first aid stuff. Will not fit in BK7 pocket. For the BK type pocket's I'd use a small Metal tin like an altiod's mint, the reason being it's going to get banged up and plastic may crack. Just throw a wrap of Electrical tape around the lid edge with string attached to ease getting the tin out of the pocket:D

now iguess im gonna hafta go and buy a tin of altoids . i wonder if my dog likes altoids. it would be cool if a skoal can would fit, i clean them out and use them to store all kinds of stuff cause of their handy size . should this be on the survival forum?

Other thing’s to do is add wrist lanyard, 550 cord or other hard braided nylon cord [won’t rot from water exposure] double it up, insert at hole at top, insert the free end’s through the loop tighten it up, now slide the free end’s though some small item with a hole in the center [I use a rubber sink washer] Knot the free end’s separately. This will cut down the chance’s of a loop snagging on brush and pulling the Knife out ,but all you have to do for a wrist loop is slide the button up. If you make the Lanyard long enough to hook on your thumb and over the back of your hand and into your palm you’ll be able to let it hang and work with both a hand’s and snap the handle of the blade right back.

Akabu, thanks for the info on making the "non-snagging" lanyard loop. Sounds like it's time for a rubber washer procurement trip to the Borg (home depot ;) ) with some 550 paracord in my pocket.

The thumb hanging method you describe sounds to me a lot like the lanyard system pictured below, attributed to Col. Applegate as best I remember. Is this the way your system works?

really frikn cool , akabu. that would definitly help when its dark out and theres still alot of work to be done . my guess is that it will especially be helpful when youre in extremis with no sleep and physicaly wrung out [and need fire wood]. THANKS ALOT!!!

that's a roger on that RokJok the Photo's are great. Was trying to figure out how take some snap's to post. Also work's quite well with MinMag thump thump

would be cool if we could see pictures of people using their beckers in different environments doing different cutting tasks.

I snapped a better pic of the choil I Dremel'ed into the rear of my BK-7 blade. As I said above, this has done nothing to reduce my faith in the BK7 to perform.

Very Nice Rokjok,how's she handle with this mod.? Maybe another project to do. might do this on my BK9:) Oh, by the way if you bought the Box of washer's from the Borg you can make a pace counter with some 550 cord and the extra washer's.Waste not....:}

Akabu, I don't notice any difference in terms of balance or handling in the "before vs after" performance of the BK7.

The original reason I put in the finger groove choil was that hard cutting (like pointing stakes with a forceful push cut) which braced my thumb against the three large teeth at the rear of the thumb ramp was proving painful. The teeth were creating localized pressure points on the ball of my thumb.

I tried wrapping my forefinger (carefully) around the heel of the blade, then using a *draw* cut to do the forceful cutting with my thumb braced on the smooth front of the thumb ramp. Ah-h-h-h.... much better on the thumb.

So I put in the finger grooved choil with a Dremel and a grinding stone. That way I could with some degree of impunity hook my forefinger around the guard and use a draw cut to do my strong cutting. It took me about 20 minutes to grind in the choil IIRC. After that, there was a bunch of rounding off the edges.

i was kinda thinkin about wrapping my bk7 s handle with that tape thats on a racket ball racket handle . along with the lanyard idea you could probably chop all day and not feel it as bad the next morning .

or you could soak you hand's in salt water for a few day's to toughen them up:) Do this for my feet if I have'nt been able to do some long walk's. I just cut a section of Bike inner tube and slip it over the handle.Plus it give's some hellus tinder to start a fire.

Have the scales sand blasted (bead blast isn't enough). Don't be shy - the more you blast them the better they feel.
Looks as good or better than original and marginally reduces circumference (that handle is just a tad thick - at least for me).
Check the Yellow pages for your local blaster.

If the handle's are to thick[ as was mine] Remove them from the blade get some sticky back sanding disk[Borg again:eek: ] put the Sanding disk on a flat surface and stroke them along the disk THe Flat Side:p , count your pass's then rotate the handle and do equal pass's.Do the same on the other half of the handle .Do not try to remove to much take yout time ,test for fit often.

does any body here ever store stuff inside the handles? i just got through modifying the sheath on mine about fifteen minutes ago. i used an iron and a wet rag to remold the kydex so it doesnt rattle and has just a little more retention. i also opend the top more by cramming a pry bar down into it and then heating it up while prying it open . then i cut and bevelled the top so it looks kinda like a mag funnel . it works great and doesnt look stupid . who woulda thunk. oh , and be careful with hot glue guns . they are messy , extremely hard to clean up after and may try to kill you.

the racket handle tape was to much [it made the handle to beefy]. so i got some black athletic tape and it looks alright, feels alright . well have to see though. im going out in the boonies tomorrow for a possible character building experience . well see how the tape holds up when i have to build a fire because somebody is damn near frozen cause they[not me] fell in the creek . ill let you know .
