The 7 is awesome, man. I understand why people like the 9, I've got one and love it myself, but don't discount the 7. Lighter, faster in the hand, and a really cool design. I prefer the longer clip and the better point that results from it, too. Chops quite well, actually. I went camping a week ago with a BK16 and a neck knife, and was wishing I had brought the BK7 instead.
Really, the only benefit to the extra length and weight of the BK9 is if you're chopping a lot. Also note that both have the same, extremely awesome sheath![]()
I feel the same. I have been giving the Bk9, 7 and 2 a workout around the shop grounds clearing a bit of brush.
While the Bk9 IS the "king" in shear size, it is also a harder knife to control AND pack for many folks. Any big blade can be dangerous for real chopping if you don't use a solid wrist lanyard and good technique. Also, by using that lanyard and a using rear pommel hold with a rolling snap cut - both the BK7 and BK2 can chop almost as well as a BK9 with a regular grip. The BK2 is ASTOUNDING in that regard for it's size. Using the rear hold allows you to extract every bit of it's 15 ounce, 1/4" thick saber ground blade's potential..
I will say this about the BK9- at $80 most places, IMHO it is THE BARGAIN among large 9-10" US made knives. You will not find a better US made knife of it's size for the price. Period.
It's also a hell of a lot of fun to use on woody plants..
