BK9 down

Thomas, just a heads up regarding Black Locust, it is a very hard and strong wood, competing with Hickory (Carya genus) as the strongest and stiffest domestic timber: but with more stability and rot resistance. It makes an awesome baton, and hiking sticks, grows quickly and relatively straight but has long thorns (1"+) that don't need time to harden, they will be firm and sharp from 1/4" out.

Very tough stuff. Very common here (NE Ohio). We have it all over our property, complete with Wood Ducks nesting in season.

honey locust is the one with long thorns - black locust has little thorns - similar to osage orange (aka hedge, bodark, or bois d'arc)

OK. Spines at the base of each leaf, and quite sharp. Somewhat toxic to man and stock, IIRC.

Not the those clusters of spines from Hell on the trunk of the Honey Locust.

:)
yup - got all 3 trees here.
far as I'm concerned, honey locust and dogwood are weeds.

Wow, this thread has went a tad off course. :D Any news from Ka-Bar yet?

Btw, black locust is a small, edge species while honey locust is the bigger tree... so, which one has the strong timber characteristic?

I got the warranty rma paper and sending it back tomorrow morning.

...one of the questions was does this knife have sentimental value, is it wrong to say yes if I've only had it a month?? :D

No, it's not wrong.

If you answer 'yes' it just means they'll wear kid gloves and mumble a short farewell as they toss it into the blast furnace. ;)

Wow, my fourth point of contact clenched up a bit when I saw that picture. Close to having a big chunk of sharp flying around!

That being said, I just emailed SYCKO about some pretty serious damage to a 1311 (not as dramatic as this one though, youch!) from chopping up some elm and hackberry a while back. I had a Junglas, BK9, and a couple 1111's cutting up the same wood and they took no damage. They're all great knives and I freaking love them all but stuff happens. The nice thing is not stressing about it because the great companies will take care of you if it does happen.

And kudos to you MadIndian, sometimes people seem to be a lot more inflammatory and less rational when they break their toys :)

Hey Grogimus.....

A point well taken..... The Mad Indian was not mad at all...... Calm, rational and polite......Yay....... It is much easier to be helpful to people who are not screaming at you...... LOL ...... Screaming can have a place mind......

Ethan

The "mad" in Themadindian is more along the lines of like the mad scientist and not mad as in angry :-D

Excellent :) I was just trying to elaborate on two points.

1- MadIndian- Nice guy, thanks!

2- Bad stuff happens. I bought my 1311 second hand, paid out way more than what it was originally. I feel safe though because I patronize good knife companies. Becker, ESEE, SYKCO.. Awesome people!

It is danged hard to compete with having Mr. Ethan himself bringing his attention to an individual problem.. Go Becker GO!

The King has returned!

I didn't get an email response or a phone call or anything, I finally called last Friday to ask what was going on and customer service said they replaced it & there were issues with shipping due to the storms by them and then by me but that their tracking info showed it at my door. I went outside and looked and sure enough

So grateful and lesson learned, stay away from pine knots in the winter and really in general ;-)

Yep... That's a 9, alright. And a new one, too. Yeah buddy. Yes, sir. She sure is perty... um hum

Another golden Ka-Bar / Uncle E. / Becker sub forum moment   I have a feeling the new nine might get very gentle use now:D
