Black 560 clamshell

Trax brings out an interesting point here. Has anyone ever actually used one of these with a black blade; does the coating hold up to regular use?? Additionally, has anyone ever seen one of the black 560's with a non-black blade. Everyone that I have seen has had the black blade as well, but I ran across one the other day, but could not see the blade stamp, that did not so I thought perhaps the blade had been replaced.

Tin Sue Me (oh, that is my cousin from China!)...
Tin Sue...

I can only speak to the black 650 and 889 blades. Coatings take a licking and keep on ticking.

Yep, Tin Sue Me is my Chinese Buck Bro as well; tells me they use lots of gooses for insect control in the rice paddies. Glad to hear that the black coating on the 560 will most likely hold up as well.

I'm pretty sure there are two versions of the black 560, one with a black titanium nitride coating (tough) and a later one with a black enamel coating (not tough). I have one of the latter and the finish is chipped off most of the swedge, the knife shows little wear otherwise. I think it would be difficult to chip or wear the t-nitride version the same way.

The two non users I have, both have a satin appearing finish on the blades. One of the frames (1992) is a smooth satin finish. The other frame (1997) has a kind of smooth crinkle coat finish.

We need pics of the enamel coat looking finish.

Decaffe Dave did a comparison on some of these quite sometime back. Couple of years or so ago, so maybe he will kick in here.

I have also tried to associate the thin and thick 560's to a time frame. But this 92 stamp on a thin 560 kind of blows that out of the water.
And the 97 stamped one, has the cordura sheath that has a 560 tag, while the 92 version, has one of the infamous 426 vertical/horizontal carry cordura sheaths.

just more fwiw

I posted a pic some time ago of a 426 Bucklite I have that *had* the black satin enamel-like finish...it blew right off with a light crushed-walnut-shell media blasting...I had taken the blade out of the handle, and the entire blade had been coated, not just the visible parts...it was not durable...

I have found that the smooth black finish does not hold up as well as the rough black finish. I think the rough finishes have more black coating than the other which makes then stronger. Just a guess.

This is a picture of my 560 with the black finish. If you look you can see the chips on the swedge. The finish does look more like powder coating, it is not very durable.

I've been trying to dig up some info on the titanium nitride coating I referenced before w/o much luck. That was something I remember reading in ad copy from an old catalog, I hope it wasn't an error that I've passed along. I'll keep looking, but I wanted to mention it because I don't want to steer people wrong about the coatings.
