If all goes well, I will have a Buck black 560 tomorrow. The seller advised me it was in the clamshell pack. I would like to check the knife out, but I hesitate to open the package. This knife will be put up and not used (I have a gray 560 I carry). I have never bought a knife I did not hold in my hand. What should I do?

Thanks,
John

Hard Call there John. Most will say open it and use it.

I gave a 110 in a clamshell still, with one of the brown curved bottom sheaths that has some nice grain markings. Even has a flashlight in it.

It seems a little more special still in the clampack. But I do wish I knew what year stamp is on the blade.

Maybe one of these days I will open it up and stick it in the toy box with the others.

I still have some 2002 Anvils still in the clampack. As well as a few Idahos

I didn't know the 560's ever came in a clam. How bout a pic?

I will get some pics as soon as it gets here. I have never seen them in a clamshell either. The seller did not have a picture of it, so I am just going off what he said. He mentioned he had two black 560 (one in the box and one in the clamshell).

What kind of flashlight was in with the 110?

Thanks,
John

Not being a collector, my opinion has no basis...but I say a clamshell pack has no collector value...open it and find out what it really is... :)

(I have never seen any reference here to 560's in clamshell packs)

Well I sure hope there were a few in the clamshell packs. Here is the email I recieved from the seller ( I hope he does not mind).

"Hi John! My name is Darrell XXX, located in XXX. I have been a long time Buck collector, but only joined the Buck Collector Club several years ago, and even more recently (about 3 months ago now) just started reading all you guys' posts on blade forum, although I have not actively participated in any of your threads. To make a long story short, I have an absolutely new black 560 with a black cordura sheath, packaged in an unopened plastic pack much like Walmart packages their 110's rather than in a box. I have never seen another packaged in this fashion. I also have another in a box that I am keeping. As I recall, it has the upside C date code, which I think is 1997, but am not sure. I noticed that in today's 560 thread that you stated you wished you could locate one at a good price. If that's the case, you may have this one for $50 plus shipping. I don't have a digital camera, so regrettably, I cannot send you a photograph. I know that you do not know me from Adam, but if you are interested, I would not have a problem shipping it to you first for inspection. It never ceases to amaze me how people like Larry Oden, Gene Merrit, Joe Houser, etc. routinely ship me knives without prior payment and trust I will subsequently send payment to them, so I certainly have no problem placing my trust in what appears to me to be a great bunch of guys like you all on this forum."

Personal info has been Xed out to protect the seller. It seems that the seller has only seen only one like it.

Thanks,
John

I agree with Chicken...that his opinion has no basis.
JUST KIDDING Trax.... ;)
He's a smart bird.
Some peeps might like to hang on the knife still in the clampack. But I doubt that taking it out would lessen it's value if it is cared for.
You most likely wouldn't be able to return it, but you could sell it for what you paid for it.
Your mileage may vary...
Goose.

Hi All! Well John's Black 560 post has forced my hand and encouraged me to make my first post here. Like most of you, I came across the forum through doing a google search on Buck knives. Since that time (about 3 months ago), I have been a daily visitor and immensely enjoyed the exchange, but felt I had little to offer. I feel that I could pick Trax and Goose out of a crowd, and, boy, did I wonder about decaff Dave when I first read his posts. Since that time, however, I have come to greatly appreciate his wit and humor. I have been in contact with several of you via direct emails and have enjoyed that immensely, so I guess it's time to participate here as well. As Trax has stated, I have never seen one of these in a clamshell either, and, as a collector, I would likewise agree with him that the clamshell has little, if any, collector value which is the reason I offerred this duplicate to John at what I consider to be a good deal. But what do I know; if clamshells are all that rare, then perhaps I made a poor choice. In any case, now that I have gotten my feet wet, I will most likely be back. You all truly appear to be a great bunch of guys that I would be proud to call a "Buck Bro."

Hey Darrell, It is good to see you post. I hope you do not take offense to my posting. This group is a great one that I have learned a lot from, and EVERYONE makes coming here worth wild no matter if they have been a member for a week or 5 years. Everyone has their veiw on things and help others out that may not see it the same way ;).

Again, It is good to see you around and I look forward to your future posts.

Thanks,
John

Welcome to the forum, Tin Sue! Please don't be a stranger, as the more the merrier. :)

Might the clamshell packaged knives be rare because the people buying them are buying them to use and the boxed ones are more likely to be purchased by collectors?

Therefore a knife in an unopened clamshell package might be rarer.

Perhaps one of you could post some pics of the clamshell 560??? Before or after opening (if opened). It'd be a good addition to the database here, since no one else has ever commented on it. ;)

I feel that I could pick Trax and Goose out of a crowd...

Shouldn't be too hard...

John, it appears that the packaging for this knive has aroused far more interest than the knife itself. You might note, and perhaps photograph for all those so interested, that the package has two "squares" to check as to whether the contents are the grey or the black 560, and, of course, the black is correctly checked in this case.

Ratty - Do you know where & when that flashlight/110 combo was marketed???

Tin Sue/JWS&W - That would be my interest in the clampack 560 as well - where and when was it marketed in the clampack??? Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Dick's, Academy, whoever...and what year...

There have been several articles written about the 560, but as I mentioned, this is the first I've heard of a clampacked 560...(I have two 560's)...

And that flashlight/110 combo is interesting as well...I'm wondering if there isn't some sort of pattern we can discern, maybe on Bucks being packaged by distributors rather than by Buck...

John, it appears that the packaging for this knive has aroused far more interest than the knife itself.

In my case, I'm more interested in who might have done the packaging/distribution (and when) rather than the actual package. We are all familiar with Cabela's and Bass Pro "special order" Buck knives, but finding [possibly] someone else packaging Bucks for their own marketing strategy is a novel concept...

Trax, thats the clampack I talked about maybe a couple of years ago here. Still have never opened it. Its the one that has no marketing dates other than a barcode.

It does say "Custom Packaging by Diversified Re-Packaging" And I did just notice a phone number.

So, no other timelines other than it does have the Edge 2000. So if edge 2000 came about in year 2000, it won't be any older than that, I guess, maybe. Oh yeah, the pic printed on the cardboard has a 1993 stamp...lol..

So just like Hard Water said, these clammies may be rare, but at least has been a fun topic of speculation. That all goes away when I slice it open. Then it just becomes another knife in the toy box.

I apologize if I have drifted this away from the black 560. I have a couple of those also.

Both are the newer thinner version. Anyone know if there are any Black in the older thicker version? Haven't seen one show up here that I remember.
