I've never heard of this. Not even around here with all the bear hunters. Anyway, my buddy was on an overnighter by himself and his dog flipped out. He then sees a black bear charging down the hill, apprently the dog treed it. He decides while it's in the tree to gather his stuff and move down the trail a ways. well it sneaks out of the tree and next thing he knows it's charging him again. by now he's donned his 9mm, he nearly shoots himself in the foot, (I believe 6" from his toe was mentioned) fires 2-3 times and finally hits it in the shoulder. It stopped and licked the wound. He said it sat there watching him get his stuff and then followed him out.

I honestly believe him nearly 100%. He called me right after it happened and I could hear the terror in his voice. Plus he admited to pissing himself. lol I don't know about it following him out though, that could have been paranoia. While this doesn't really bother me, I start out with my pistol on my side. Just seems wierd. I've never heard such a story around here.

could it have had cubs? seems like the wrong time of year for that.

PS, it had to be damn close. I know this because this guy couldn't hit the A-Team van at 25 yards with a full mag.

Usually they don't come to get you they are just bluff charging.

There was a guy around here that was bluff charged 5 times and he just held his hands up and made himself big and eventually the bear wandered off.

The fact that it followed him out without attacking him sort of supports IT wasn't out for blood.

good point. I still don't know about it following him out though. That could be paranoia. Like I said too, I know it was really close to him. He would have never hit it otherwise.

I dunno, seemed crazy odd to me.

Most charges are mock, but occassionally a sick or weak bear will atttack a human.

I have heard and read of the seldom black bear stalking a human, it can happen.

They say if attacked by a Grizzley; Play dead

If attacked by a Black bear; fight back!

I am definietly thinking this bear was sick.

It is true that most charges are mock charges but it is highly unusual for a black bear to even mock charge - let alone attack.

Some lessons here:

1. If you choose to carry a firearm... practice and practice often.

2. If you choose to carry a firearm... carry a caliber capable of stopping the largest threat you may possibly encounter.

Mock charge or not, bear charges me is going to die. Bye, bye, bear.

I agree.

If he wounded it, I think it would have been wise to finish it off, rather than leave it to perhaps suffer....

I always pack heavy protection in bear country. Combat shotguns in camp, and big caliber revolvers out on the trail, but I don't blame the bears in any way for what bears do every day to make a living in the wild!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What an irresponsible moron!!!!!!! That numbskull should never be allowed out in the woods again!

To wound a predator and then run snivelling and crying and pissing himself without taking the responsibility of standing ground and killing the animal is the height of cowardice and idiocy.

That imbecile should just stay in the local bar and drink beer and tell lies to "the boys."

listen captain iron balls. He was scared and obviously not thinking clearly. Some of us hold it together under pressure better than others, but to come on a internet forum and slander someone with ones e-chest poking out just shows your short comings. so do me a favor a stfu.

Until any of us are in that situation, I don't think we should judge the man.

The bear charged him, he went into survival mode and in the end he survived. Job well done in my oppinion. If he had the chance to go back and do things differently, he probably would.

well there's no reason for his comments. Even in his shaken state last night he expressed his guilt over not killing it.

No I agree bro and was just messin with ya !

Hell if a bear had charged me there would be more than just piss in my pants !!! Saying that though at least then I'd have something to throw at it eh !!!;)
