BlackNinja had a few spyderco knives up for trade, and i had an interest in any of the spydercos in plain edge or combo edge. I email him my list of knives that i would be willing to trade for any of the PE or CE spydercos. My list consisted of a Benchmade mini dejavoo and a Kershaw mini cyclone, both in my opinion are very comparable to Spyderco. First email sent back from BlackNinja was "What are you interested in?" I respond with "I'm interested in the spyderco chinese lum (PE), black caly jr., starmate, [or] Kopa". BlackNinja responds with "If you want to make real offers, then do so; otherwise you’re wasting both our time! The offer is offending (and you know so)!"
How insulting is his response! It was not like i was offering him some cheap Maxam knives or knives knowingly uncomparable to Spyderco. He had already seen what i had to offer beforehand. If he did not like my offer, he should have said so immediately after i gave him my list of knives. Horrible experience with this fellow!:mad::mad:

I don't see anything insulting in his reply. IMO, he was upfront. Maybe that's something you aren't accustom to. I also believe the following is possibility a portion of the problem and why your being so sensitive.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly! This is your area to tell about your experiences (Good or Bad) with dealers, sellers, and individuals you've bought, sold, and traded with.

Bring this to GB&U because you got your feelings hurt in an e-mail ?

By the way, your offering vs. what you wanted. . . . .hoping to hit the lottery ?

Being upfront would have been a response like "Sorry, not interested in your offer." DONE. Instead he proceeds to ask what i am interesting despite seeing my offer. I do not know the value or each and single Spyderco out there, but I do know that spydercos are comparable to benchmade and kershaw. If he was offering some custom knife, i definitely would not have offered him what i offered. Another thing is that BlackNinja could have asked if i'd like to add cash in with the knives i offered.

Yes, gigOne, i do know that the GBU is for those you've traded, sold, or bought with. That's why i said if it belongs in WC, then move the thread to WC.

You could combine every knife you offered and would still far short when compared with what you were interested in.

As previously mentioned, i do not know the value of each and single spyderco knife there is in the market. Fact is that he saw what had to offer. if he didnt like the offer, then why did he proceed to ask what i was interested in?

Overall respect goes a hell of a long way. It's much better to reply with a polite response.

thats just what i think

Actually it does depend on what you value your knives at - and what the other party values theirs at. A little common respect goes a long way. I have made offers and gotten some very polite responses showing me that the knives I was looking at were well beyond what I had to offer (my bad) - but they were polite and educational - not abrupt or harsh. And I have thanked those whom were patient and kind enough to tolerate my learning curve. :)

On the other hand I have gotten some great deals when the other was just looking to move some knives and as it turned out he had been looking a long time for one I offered.

And Spyderco knives are funny - they go up and down in value for reasons that are beyond understanding. One week waaaay up and the next (usually after I get one...) waaaay down.

So never mind the proud, and abrupt- just let them go on their way. And hang in there as there are some very classy people here that do understand that not all of us are experts in every model and make of knives for trade or sale.

Right on the money, Aj1985 and TurnerIII. I, too, have been offered knives that were valued way below what i wanted to trade. Instead of bashing on the individual, i asked them if they would add cash to the knife they were willing to trade. Heck, recently, i had a smooth deal and a member where i asked if he would add cash to make up for the value of the knife- and he did. Others, i had rejected their offers nicely by just saying "Thanks for your offer, but i am not interested."

I know you've said you don't know the prices, but it's generally good to look around and get a rough idea on the cost so you don't get screwed over.

He didn't know what you were looking for, and Spydercos vary in price. If you wanted to trade a Vex for a Delica, he'd probably consider that to be perfectly reasonable. On the other hand, Lums and Kopas are both rather costly. A Vex or a Mini Cyclone is definitely not comparable in price.

Truth be told, I'd be feeling slightly insulted if you just made an offer like that to me and I didn't know you had no idea on their market prices.

He was abrupt with his reply, but i seem to get rude replys from many members around here, and not from bad offers. Its just how they act. Some people are just jerks. I always reply politely. No matter what. And what you offered was definatly in the ball park of what he had..

Th232, i was offering a kershaw mini cyclone and a Bob Lum Benchmade mini dejavoo.

You didn't say this in your first post. You left out the "Bob Lum" before Benchmade Mini Dejavoo. That certainly makes a difference.

Ok, so he said he wasn't interested in your knives, and you don''t know the value right, so heres some help for the next time. Mini cyclone's run about 40.00 on the aftermarket, Mini Lum about 80. Now, his Lum Chinese about 200.00, Starmate around 200.00 and Kopa, depending on the handle 125.-180. These are estimates, and depend on condition, the collector, and whether or not the box is present etc.

Agreed..even if he got offered a piece of crap (which is not the case with a nice BM and a kershaw) how much time was wasted by reading an email? really?

No matter what kind of offers you get, please be nice in saying no thank you, its that easy...And if you think he is wasting your time then don't ask for offers..be VERY SPECICIFIC in what your looking for...ok...Im talking to everyone in general...communication is important to make everythgin goes smoothly on the forums for sales and trades....kindness just makes you a decent person... :)

Maybe it's the time of the year but it seems that the words "no thanks" have become very difficult to utter.

Alot of folks lately need lots of emotion to turn down a simple trade...................

I agree that a bit of courtesy and respect goes a long way. No matter the offer, there's no reason to shoot back a rude response. Obviously we're only hearing one side of the story, but it does look a bit overboard.

There are a lot of rude people on Bladeforums. It's a shame really because it keeps a lot of new blood away

This is the Internet, sort of like being in the Big City (Think New York)

While there are a lot of nice/kind/polite folks here, it is still a good idea to have a thick skin and to pay close attention to your wallet and watch.

I think the street goes both ways, yes they could have been nicer, but I think it's reasonable that the person offering up a trade at least has a ball park idea what the value differential is.

Also most people trade UP not DOWN. so if you're offering cheaper knives, and you were, IMO, you should have offered a quantity of cheaper knives in excess of the more valuable knives.
