Blade coatings & finishes.

I stripped my JMD. Tried several mediums to force a patina, didn't like any of them. Then cut a hot steak on/off the grill, and BAM! instant hot-bluing effect. Since then, no problem with rust or corrosion.

HECK, I've had more problem with rust on the decarb on a SAR5 that I stripped recently. And I swear I've sanded that blade so much that I've actually altered the thickness of the primary bevel. And I STILL can't get all the decarb off it. And it will start to rust withing 24 hours, even having it in my closet in what is really a quite controlled and dehumidified environment (have an A/C vent in there). Very frustrating. But the JMD (not in as controlled an environment) has no problem.

I will definitely try the hot steak patina once my coating wears off then, thanks man :)

Any pictures of it by any chance?

I know what you're talking about first hand!
After countless hours of hand sanding

Both have seen some kitchen use, didn't force the patina

Sorry, cloudy today, not best light for pics

Looks good though. Now. Yours. I'm letting mine sit a bit. I'm tired.

Have not finished yet.
But at least it already cuts stuff, and that's before strops come into play...
Aside from trying to sand out the deep grinding marks with decarb in them, I've spent a good amount of time getting the blade thinner, and loosing the transition between primary grind and secondary bevel.
Have high hopes for finished edge!

I prefer uncoated blades as well. I'm really disappointed we haven't seen more B.I.G. finish offerings... I only managed to snag a single NMFSH with it, and it's a great compromise between coated and Satin.

what do you think about black wrinkle coating? Is it tough coating? any experience with it.

yes it is. My favorite coating from busse is the original smooth coat. That stuff was near impossible to remove. The modern smooth green comes off much easier. The gritty sand paper feel of the ergo tan coating was also very tough

Got this done for an international buyer. Satin FBM Proto, sent to Ionbond for Diamond Black DLC. Turned out nicely. About a year ago he sent me an email detailing while fishing how a landed 14' shark got out of control on deck and was dispatched by this knife. No pix, unfortunately, but glad it's seeing use. :)
I took these before sending it to him.

Before. One of my sale thread pix.

After. Inside shot.

Outside, overcast daylight. Note the edge was actually coated as well (Handle slabs were removed for coating too, full knife DLC'd), but looks like it was resharpened post treatment... Just a reflection, he got to resharpen it, himself. :D

Here's my personal favorite.

Frosty frosty home made satin.

Looks as if it would chill a drink nicely were it submerged.

I usually get black in CG, since I strip all the users anyway.

Naked SR101 is no problem for me. Use it like any other carbon steel. (I have heard of several folk who won't buy factory satin SR101 for safe queens because of spotting issues)
