Blade Forums Customs Forum-Are we changing?

Well Ryan, he's entitled to his opinion, but I've been here a real long time and I sure don't share that view. More to the point, you've been here long enough to form your own opinion. Do what you think is right based on your experience here. I've certainly enjoyed your posts and your knives.

Roger

I greatly appreciate that Roger, my eyes have been opened a little bit today... I couldn't stay away from BladeForums no matter how hard I tried. I will just be careful which neighborhoods I wander into. :D

another maker told you you shouldn't post your work here?
what if I told you you should?

Don Thank you, I have followed your work for many years! and Lorien you know how I feel about you  . All I was saying is that this seems to be where the Elite post. I have a long way to go, back to the topic at had. "If you don't have something nice to say... "

you bring a lot to the table Ryan, I like seeing your knives as much as I like seeing them 'Elite' knives. The diversity of knives on display in this forum, to me, is one of this forum's strengths!

Ryan - take a look at the knives posted here over that past three or four pages of this forum. Then tell me again it's reserved for elites only.

I posted the very first knife I made here.

Roger

All I was saying is that this seems to be where the Elite post...

I find this isn't really true though. I have only been around a short time and came here first as a very small time collector but it seems to me that the change is not only in that the "elite" don't post their work nearly as much but also I don't see collectors posting as much of the "good stuff". There seems to be less discussion all around and in that vacuum has arisen more newer makers posting their own work, myself included. And, as more do, then more feel that this is the place for it. In my relatively short time it seems to me that this used to be a forum for collectors to discuss knives but has changed to one of makers soliciting "opinions".

Like you Ryan, this thread has been an eye opener. There is a ton of good, if sometimes unsettling, information here.

Ryan

let me weigh in as well - I went back and had a look at your threads and the recent WIP - and I agree with Roger and Lorien. I think you've clearly "done your homework" and presented yourself well, and I think you should stay!

Sure, you are not yet DHIII...but I remember Don posting a few of his early efforts again recently....and he wasn't "DHIII" back then either:D

You don't have to post a mosaic Damascus/Ivory masterpiece to make "the club" or whatever - one of my favorite customs is a Matt Lamey Chopper with a very nice hamon...but I whack on things with it because that's what it's made for !

I commend you for putting yourself out there, and also for realizing that you have room to grow...so do what works for YOU

Bill

Ryan, I have horrible grammar and post very ugly knives all the time and I could care less what anyone thinks :)

If someone gave you a message like that just ignore them and feel sorry for there ignorance.

Happy Easter

Only the Elite?, no such thing. The diversity of makers and collectors here is what makes it fun and interesting.

I so rarely like getting involved in conflictual and opinionated discussions. it takes a LOT of mental energy to respond and figure out my position.

This is the benefit, though: By being involved it causes us to think hard about *why* we have this opinion, and then how to convey the message properly.

Not everyone has the energy or the communication skills. Or the emotional fortitude. Typing quickly can get troublesome. We've all seen it.

Earlier I mentioned how not all have the command of writing skills to impart what they want to say. Bill does.

Critique alert: Also in his thread: HE USED SHORTER SENTENCES AND A LOT OF SPACING TO ALLOW US TO READ IT. Forgive the shouting, but there are really good voices (some in this thread) whose words (thoughts, really) I can't read because; it's a wall of text, or a grammatically, punctualized mess.

If you are participating on the internet forums, it is NOT the same as writing a book. It isn't. You have to break things up into manageable bites. The clearly written examples are right here. Just like a good knife: See why it's declared good and incorporate that vision into your own work.

It seems this sub forum is a Gentleman's club that has unposted rules and qualifications to be allowed to post your work. When I start to question whether comments are directed at me whether it be my past offerings or my grammar. I choose to go where I know I am welcome.
And I'm perplexed. From my experience I identify current and past problems with hard discussions as a communication/translation issue.

Clarity + Truth = Understanding. I point this out twice above. Ryan: No one else has mentioned grammar in their posts but me. So, I feel your comment is directed at me.

If you think because I am asking for clarity in critical communication, I am being an 'Elite' gentleman's grammar snob, then I'm stumped. Please explain.

I've only been DH3 for a few years. The name change was easy, but the sex change was a pain!

Coop. I was not calling you a grammar snob but if you feel the need to point out that "Some in this thread" ... post "Wall of text, or a grammatically, punctualized mess." Ask that person directly. Or quote the said "Post". If it was my post you could not read, I would hope you would let me know so that I can portray my feelings in a manner that can be understood by you and others.

The Elite portion of that post was directed at the photo that was posted about a knife that (as I understood) should not be shared here. We don't know that person or their abilities or disabilities. Perhaps they were proud of that knife, and it took courage to post it up. What if that person visits this thread an sees that they have been made an example of. Don was the only one that made a positive comment.

Hi Ryan,

Got it, on the knife example. Understood.

No, I would not call out one individual. I have a hard enough time calling out anything negative, but we BOTH love this craft so much we have to. I used common examples, not all in this particular thread.

So I shotgun blast everyone, in the hopes some shrapnel will make us say: 'Ouch'! I guess it worked. LOL!

I understand. Thanks.

Coop

Kevin,

Thanks for this thread. I wish I had time to read every post tonight, but I will in coming days.

Here is what I find missing from EVERY online forum. There is no place where collectors can candidly share our opinions of the work of various makers, and most importantly the reasons behind those opinions, without worrying about offending someone or generating a lot of ruffled feathers or a giant pissing contest. If you and I and a couple of other collectors where sitting at the bar having a few beers we could candidly talk about various makers' work - what is exciting us lately . . . and what isn't. But there just seems to be no way to do that kind of thing online - at least not anymore. I have thought about this a lot lately, and it saddens me. It certainly tempers my level of passion for the hobby, because I am not able to learn from some of the guys you mentioned earlier in this thread, and many times I feel like I am just on my own - no one to share honest dialog with about the hobby. And I wonder if this problem is stifling interest in knife collecting and growth of the collecting community. I even thought it would be great to create a no-holds-barred forum for collectors only - no makers allowed - to avoid hurt feelings, politics, and folks afraid of speaking candidly and thereby pissing off some maker and getting on the wrong side of some politics. But of course there are a million reasons why that would never work, the most obvious being that once something is put out there in writing on "the Interwebs" . . . you lose control over where it goes. Sadly, I don't see any way around it.

And I guess that I do not think that anything will come of this thread, either.

But it is very good to know that I am not alone and that some others out there yearn for a place where real honest discussion about custom knives would be possible. So again, I appreciate that you started this thread.

Man, you reach out to me any time you feel it, and I will commiserate, commentate and communicate until you have had your fill.....YOU ARE NEVER alone in this community....that I personally guarantee, and I know alone and on my own. Try sitting in your own knife store for days on end without customers or anyone to share your passion with....THAT is alone....been there, done that, no t-shirt:D

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Hello Steven, it is nice to see you back!

There was no doubt that I felt a tingle of excitement
when I saw that you joined-in once again.... :)

As to what Kevin started - a great discussion about
an important and somewhat neglected issue...
I hope that WE ARE BACK to the GOOD OLD DAYS!!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Isn't this the Knife Reviews and Testing sub-forum place for that? http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/718-Knife-Reviews-amp-Testing
