blade grind difficulty?

Great idea Ken!
I think you tripped Robs trigger!;)

I just use a thin rubber disk on top of my disk grinder to flat grind.
This take most of the heat away and works well with the right paper.

I rough the blades before heat treat also on the 2x72.
This doesn't leave as much heavy material to remove after heat treat. The rubber pad (about 60 durometer) give a bit when you grind the bevels.

The track grinder like you are speaking about would make long blade grinding a breeze!

All blade grinding takes a good amount of skill. Flats are still easier for me. Hollow with a larger wheel is tougher. The blade does not track like it does with an 8 or 10 inch wheel as well on a 14 in wheel.

Darrel
tell me about it.
My first hollow grind was 27+ years ago, was on a 36"
stone wheel. I still have it too.
if anyone is interested in seeing it let me know.:barf:
:D I'll post it on a new thread.

Gray
Sounds like fun!!!!!!!!
What kind of stone was it.
Wonder if Rob can think of a grinder for that wheel?

This is ingenious, and Rob is definitely your man. I can't wait to see photos of the this thing.

Best thread of the year!

Thanks Darrel, I also use a rubber pad on my variable disc sander to clean up all the 220grit marks as thats where I stop on the flat platen. Works great to clean up all those belt splice marks and square up the blade ,I guess I'm just trying to become more efficient .Plus I like a flat grind but love a very slightly convexed flat grind even better especially on the big choppers which I've been playing arround with a little lately .(just a phase I hope ,to messy)
But I sure like um!

Graymaker, I know just what youy talking about. We had one of those on the farm.As a kid we'd sharpen everything on it.Ours had pedals like a bike and youd set down pedal and work at the same time . I also attempted to grind a hunter or two offa that thing, pretty rank but they did the job .
Oh Thanks ! samwereb

I think it would be great for us knifemakers to share ideas on jigs and shop gadgets ,Heck I got a ton of them and they sure help me and I know you guys got a bunch also . I think collectively we could become much more efficient and exacting with our craft.
I am however concerned about new knifemakers using some of these crutches and jigs to make a knife having never learned first how to do it by hand.Any thoughts ?

well ken i have been a grinding fool for the last five years and free hand is the way too learn. i also like flat/convex grinds. i am really looking forward to this tank track palten. i have heared of them made to minmick a hollow grind but not convex.i was wondering? has anyone tryed one of these rubber duro pads to line a flat palten with? i use grafite cloth put on with a drop of rubber contact cement. easy to clean for a new piece.

I've ordered a few different belts for the rotating platen tool. I should get the in a few days. After I clear a few pokers from the fire, I'll build a couple of prototypes. I still haven't been able to sleep 'cuz this idea!

Anyway, who's gonna test it out? I hope to have one built in a week or so.

...must get sleep....must get sleep....:(

Take care,
Rob

Darrel
I have no idea now , it was motorized though.
it was used to grind cutters for making wooden
shoe shanks. hey you know, if you go with a
big enough wheel
you might not notice a hollow, say 144 inches or so :D
Ken I think you had an old time hone for putting
an edge on tools,, ayaup,, the old peddle power..
this was a big old grinder.
I do to think every one should hand grind at frist I still do
unless it's a long flat, then I'll use a simple block set up
to gauge with..
I had my share of jigs and set up-s as
a machine operator in the tool trade..
interesting I don't like use them any more then I have to.
Rob,, this could take the place of that damn $100.00 +
wheel too, at the same time. for hollow grinding,
it would turn easier to with at least one bigger wheel on it.
also if you make the front sheaves removable you could make
it a one inch grinder pretty fast.or a 3 inch just as fast.
Rob, now your not going to get any sleep:D

Jerry ,cuz i'm to darn busy trying to get a couple knives together for the show and don't have time to finnish it just yet. Plus my lathe sucks and I need to get someone else to machine my upper shiv

I've been away for a while and have been wondering . So who has finnished theres and how do you like it ??
