Blade preference for camping?

A machete is a handy thing to have. I have a 18'' CS Latin that I have used a LOT. If money is tight right at the moment...then a BK14/machete combo would do well, and you could also carry your BK2 in case u needa chop up a truck or sumthin!

I also always carry a light folding saw. Right now it's a Gerber, a slideout really not a folder...LOVE LOVE LOVE that thang!

If you're on a tight budget, grab a Tramontina, then keep some money for a BK short.

I'm taking the 9, 5, and a 14 with me this weekend; well and a trail hawk.

I'd purchase the 11/14 first for the following reasons:
1- you will use it around the camp more than the bk2 (for smaller tasks).
2- you have the edc option.
3- you will still have money left for the bk9 (or other supplies).

I really find a smaller knife much more handy for camping and hiking than the larger bk9.

I personally use a BK9 with a Mora piggybacked on it (I know, blasphemy!) and it works wonders. So I'm going to say go with the BK9 since I've had such good luck with it.

Are you kidding? Get this. Now.

I use my bk13 and get the job done with my tuffness alone, cut whole trees down!;)

But for you I recommend a bk9 :D

I will obey the Becker overlords and get a nine. Hey, would it be to much to ask for some one to mic the inside of the remora sheath?

I think you're better off with an edc blade and a machete or saw. The 9 may be great but you say you don't camp much so the small 14 will get tons more use. Plus I don't think the 9 is going to do anything for you that a 6 dollar Tram wont. I generally go out with an Izula and a pruning saw and have yet to feel under knifed. When I carry other blades it's because I want them to play with, not because I need them.

Wood processing, campsite clearing, and to a lesser extent, looking like a bada$$:D. I like the BK5 but I was looking for more of a big chopper. The BK9 would be great but it would be nice to have a different blade for small stuff. is the BK9 nimble enough to do small stuff well enough to justify using only it?

Plus I don't think the 9 is going to do anything for you that a 6 dollar Tram wont.

I like Trams, got several and use them often. I like the Ontario 12 inch, Fiddleback, and so on. Flat out chopping contest, one piece of wood, machete wins. Clearing green, small stuff the same. But processing firewood like he mentions, no contest. The Cro-Van and heat treat will hold up while hardwoods like oak and hickory will eat a Tram up. This I know from experience. You can process a pile of oak with the nine and still slice up carrots and potatos for your stew. Then do it again the next day....

If the main reason you're getting the knife is to process firewood, why not get a hatchet or ax? Or even a folding saw.

the 14 is a great pocket carry for EDC and camping -- works well for making fuzz sticks & kindling, cutting up steaks, carving a spoon, cleaning fish/small game, etc...
that and a 12 or 18" machete and a gerber/fiskars sliding saw and you'd be set for less than $70.

I say get the 9. You wont be disappointed. I was hesitant about pulling the trigger on the 9 at first but once I got it in my hands I fell in love. I was expecting it to be bigger but was happy the size seemed to be just right. Chances are if you are into knives you have some pocket knives that can fill the edc roll until you can save for a 11/14.

Like trade said go for the king

Yeah, I would like the 14 since my edc is curently a slightly moddified cold steel kudu. But I want the nine doggonit! Testerone tells me "GET THE BK9!" logic tells me "Save your money son, you don't need knives" and somewhere between the two there is a voice saying "Get a machete and a 14, you'll be better off!!!". In other news... I think my logic is skewed.:o

I'd get the 9. Seriously, if you want a BKT, you want a 9.
