Blade Show 2009 is just about eight weeks away. Some are already completing knives so I guess it’s time to post the thread.

We would sure appreciate pre-views of any BLADE bound knives makers care to share. Even if you post photos in your own thread, please post them here as well. For future reference, it's very convenient to have all '09 BLADE Show knives in one thread.

If anyone has trouble posting your photos, please feel free to e-mail them to me and I will get them posted up: Kj1056@aol.com

Let's start off with two of Kyle Royer's JS Test Knives.

Here's the first knife I have ready for Blade this year. Well, not ready, as I still have to figure what I want to do about the sheath...

I drew this knife out several months ago, mostly for fun, since I've never made anything this big before. A couple weeks ago, it was just the right day to try something like this, so I gave it a shot.

The blade is forged from 1" round 52100. Blade is 15-1/4" long and overall is just shy of 21". The knife is so long, I actually got to use my sword heat treating oven for the first time. I built the oven about 3 years ago, but I never got a chance to use it. The blade is differentially tempered and combined with it's long, distal taper, the blade is actually quite flexible. My natural tendency is to make any large knife a "chopper" but I went the other way on this one, and it is really fast and rather light. In fact, at 22 oz., it is 3/10 oz less than my standard ABS size competition knife, and that knife is not particularly heavy itself.

The handle is desert ironwood. This was also a first for me. The handle is a combination of sandblasted surfaces, smooth polished surfaces, and some carved scrolls. A lot of the inspiration for this effect are some very cool "rusticated" smoking pipes a friend showed me and I loved the look. Domed pins are nickel silver.

Nice!!!! I think that qualifies as a "gentleman's bush sword":D

Burt,

Nice work, I especially like the treatment of the handle. It looks like the treatment emphasized the natural variations in the wood density. I have seen similar effects in wenge wood artifacts by Jim Kelso.

WoW! Burt.
That's a heck of a knife. Like the blade profile, especially the slight re-curve.
The handle treatment is outstanding! Really like the carved scrolls and definitely the "rusticated" texture.

Lots of possibilities for the sheath.

Photo is "professional" quality as usual, IMO.

THANKS, for the early look.

Yay Burt! I love it:D
I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with as far as a sheath, as well.

Burt thats cool. It seems Jason Knight style size wise. I'd love to see the laminated blades when/if you make them.

Burt - that looks terrific - can't wait to pick it up and see how it feels.

What do I have for Blade? A table........finally. I am at 25 R. I have no idea where that is as they have not posted the chart, but I was told that it is in the ABS section.

I have 24-D which is NOT in the ABS section (oh well, guess I still wait)

Here is a knife I'll have at Blade for one of my JS Test knives.

It has a 12" 5160 blade, German Silver fittings, African Blackwood handle and an overall length of 16 3/4" long.

Thanks for looking!

I need to finish an order before I start show knives but I'll have a couple
these at the show. And a few folders also.

Jon, thanks for making me laugh at the end of a long workday :D

Don, I haven't felt this level of anticipation since I was a kid counting down the days until Christmas! Can't wait to see these blades evolve!!!

I like that you included the raw(ish) materials in your picture.
I love thinking about how I'd turn a circular shape into one that resembles a knife, and this picture really provides whatever it is that Roger was referring to.
And the finished product is always such a treat for the history of high end custom knives. You are leaving your mark in a big way dude.
