Blade Show West

Really nice offer Ickie, I'd luv to meet some knife makers, as I'll be one soon! I just moved to Oregon (near Rainier) and I'll be at the show Friday and Sunday.

Stop over and have a beer and knife talk. Maybe a burger or two or three. I'll be at the show on Friday and Sunday.

For those of you just seeing this thread for the first time, there is a map and directions to the BBQ on the 9th post. This is a freebie gathering. You only need to bring your appetite, your thirst and your "cutting edge" enthusiasm!

I'm looking forward to meeting and seeing everyone.

Well Ickie if I was in your area I would stop by. But I am here in the great state of Indiana. But thanks for asking all of us. Have a great time with the BBQ.

The BBQ was wonderful. Great guys. Robert, Gene, Jim and Tom stopped over, along with Gene's wife and a neighbor of mine. Jim and Tom had some of their work with them. Any of you that buy the knives of makers on this forum should take a look at their work, IMHO. Excellent craftsmanship. We talked about forging, integral bolster creation (Jim Vile ...ib2v4u...has some unique ideas on the subject!), grinding techniques, milling guard slots, and on and on and on.

We had a great time. I hope to make this an annual BBQ. I'll probably move it to Saturday night next year, so that it doesn't occur at the same time as the Blade Show West banquet. This will allow the knifemakers holding tables to attend if they wish.

Robert (rmd on the forums) is a new maker. He was soaking up a lot of information last night. Robert is class act, as are the others, and is a great addition to our little forum group here.

Tom Kernan's work is amazing! He forges some really, really nice damascus. I like his style and fit and finish a lot. Tom doesn't say much on this forum, but in my opinion his knowledge of knifemaking far surpasses what the perception is on this forum. He's humble, friendly and great to be around.

Jim Vile is very creative in his thinking about processes and not afraid to try something new, especially at the forge and anvil. Jim had about 10 finished knives with him and they were all "keepers"! He also has a knack for combining damascus patterns, bolters and handle materials to create a nice flow to his knives.

I greatly appreciate all that attended and look forward to seeing all of you again next year. Thanks for stopping in gentlemen!

The BBQ is open on Sunday evening for anyone that wants to come over. I'll be at the show today with more maps for anyone that wants to stop over. Anyone that had a table at the show that isn't leaving until Monday morning is welcome to stop by.

It was a lot of fun, your a great host Scott. Thanks for opening your home, I look forward to next year.

Thank you for your hospitality, food, beer and kind words. I had a great time at the show and at the Ickies home. Did have a nice time at both. Scot has a nice well thought out small shop on his nice home and is a fine host. Look out guys cause he has a stack of blades forged and his new KMG is ready to roll now. I have got to agree that Tom Kernan's work is top notch. He had a blade of his damascus that had a great pattern and another blade flat ground blade that really impressed me. Nice work from a nice guy. Hope to see some more of him as he is close by.

I had a great afternoon at the show Friday and meet some of the members and everyone was a nice guy. Got tips and how tos on selling, mokume, grinding, polishing and a ton of just friendly chit chat. Found a couple makers from my home state of Montana and shot the breeze with them. Met Plain old Bill. Saw some wonderful work to inspire me was on every table. These guys are amazing and pictures don't do the work justice. Artists with steel, wood and leather. Interesting concepts. Tons of great scale material, billets of damascus. I could have spend a fortune. I limited myself to some great stabilized blocks and scales, some titanium for liners.

Did I mention I had a great time!

PS. Thanks for the huge bearing race. I think I have my 52100 supply for a while and then some.

I don't have much to add to what Tom and Jim have already said. The beer was good, the burgers were better and Scott is a terrific host. Thank you again for opening your house to us.

Gentlemen,
It was my pleasure. If you're ever in the area, just give me a shout and let me know. You don't need and invitation to come and visit, just let me know when you're coming and I'll try to be in town.

Ickie

I feel really bad that you weren't able to find my place. I'll catch you next year, as you've stated.

I just noticed this for the first time. You're welcome and did you get the hammers made out of those large bearing rollers? If yes, photos please!

holy smokes Ickie, I live only 22 min away from your house! Too bad I'm still stuck on the East coast attending school, otherwise I'd definitely come out and pay you a visit. Enjoy the show!

MechNinja dude,

You didn't check the dates of the original string of threads. This occurred last summer. I'll be starting a new thread about Blade West 2009 barbeque in about 3 or 4 months. But.......

I'm working in the shop all this week from Tuesday, March 11th thru Saturday, March 15th getting ready for the April OKCA show in Eugene. You're welcome to call ahead to let me know you're coming and can share in some shop time. Maybe hammer out a blade. I have all the stuff you'd need to make a blade.

Give me a shout at (330) 284-3103 before heading over here, to make sure I'm not out running an errand.
