I voted for 440C, but 1095 is fine (I see it's winning the poll as I vote). I'm going to get one or two regardless of the results of the poll. I kinda like plain bolsters for this for some reason. - Ed J

Bareheaded, federal shield, steel is my preference for bolsters but nickel silver is ok, bolster should be smooth as a baby's bottom or rat tailed, normal nicks on the same side, swedges, steel liners, any of the "premium" stainless steels would be good... D2 is good too... I have enough 1095 to last a lifetime but I think it will likely win the poll and I'm ok with it also.

The swedge on the Wharncliffe blade should look like this:

D2, though I'd be fine with 1095, with swedges. Deep single groove bolster, either brushed or polished, though brushed would be my preference, stainless liners.

voted 1095, D-2 would be nice. "premium stainless" I don't know a lot about traditional knives but this just doesn't sit well with me.

I'd prefer 440C or 14-4 CrMo.
Canal Street works with both.
GEC works with 440C.
Either alloy or either manufacturer would be awesome.

I voted Premium Stainless: 440C (GEC & Canal), 14-4 CrMo (Canal), ATS-34 (Queen)
They are much easier to maintain than D2
And I have enough carbon steel knives

Bareheaded
- Federal shield
- Nickel silver bolster - grooved but smooth is fine
- Blades - due to configuration, normal nicks on the same side. I assume everyone wants swedges - Yes
- Liners - I assume everyone wants stainless? - Yes
- Size - seems that most want it under 4". I would like a thin 3 3/4".
...............Canal Street have an existing 3-1/2" trapper pattern - Incorrect!!

Canal Street Half Moon is 3 3/4" long
and they use 14-4 CrMo which is their standard steel so it will NOT add to the price and it holds a wicked edge
They do have a wide selection of bone and wood

I'm really liking my GEC's 440C, so I voted for premium stainless (I assume ATS-34 and 14-4 CrMo would be great as well).
I agree with Charlie's considerations on the pattern; also, I think that it would be nice to come out with a "new" knife.
I know this could mean a higher price...but, honestly, if the whole BF knife thing would end in adding a wharncliffe blade to the GEC #48 knife, we would have a great knife, but at the same time we would probably be missing a chance of getting something new.
As for the other features mentioned in the first post, I agree with everything (bareheaded, shield, nicks, swedges); as for size, I'd like it most between 3,5" - 3,625".

I voted good ole carbon. Until I found this forum I was a stainless exclusively guy, even on all my Case knives. This forum and my yella Trapperlock changed that!
I have knives in all the steels except ATS-34, and I haven't had to sharpen Queen's D2 or Canal's 14-4 yet. Heaven knows how that will go as I'm sharpening challenged. I've had best results with 1095 and 420HC (Buck), not bad with 440.

As for the other details, a smooth n/s bolster is fine, yes to stainless liners and blade swedges.

I'd like to point out that the GEC #48 is a different pattern than we voted for!

The knife we voted for is a curved Jack Handle pattern, and the GEC #48 and other slim trappers are Serpentine Jacks. A little study makes the difference clear.
The #48 above was the 2010 forum knife at a different Knife Forum.
I'd like to stick with the program. . . . . . . . . .

Splitting hairs here, but we'll se what we can do...for the budget we've set for ourselves. I don't know if the manufacturers would be willing to create such a similar pattern...well, maybe GEC would................

Carbon steel - smooth bolster.

Prefer large enough to use the BF tang stamp.

best

I voted 1095 but I'm in regardless of steel. Barehead, nickel bolsters, I'd prefer grooved myself, either single larger or double smaller, but not a deal breaker at all. Shield I don't have a big preference but I would prefer not a bar. I do agree with trying to stick with the pattern we voted for.

I voted 1095, but thats mainly a vote for GEC.

O1 would be even better. 440C would be acceptable, as a change of pace in the forum knives.

1095. 3 7/8". I don't care a whole lot about the bolster. grooved/rattail can be nice. but if it's more attainable just staying plain jane, that's fine too.

second choice would be D2. Followed by ats34 or 440c.

Run of the mill stainless like 420hc is just boring to me. Run of the mill carbon has character.

Voted for 1095 with D2 in a close second. Bolster doesn't really make a big difference to me.

Voted D2. Would like rat tail bolster, swedges, stainless liners and the bigger the better.
