Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all - I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season.

This will be the second annual BEST BOWIE thread. As last year, this is more about assembling and displaying a diverse virtual assembly of the state of the bowie as it exists today

Requirements are:

1) Definition - Flayderman wrote an entire book in search of a definition. There probably isn't one that all will endorse, so I'll try to be as inclusive as possible: a) fixed blade; b) 6" blade length and up; c) must be a custom piece. That's it. Fighters, camp knives and traditional bowies are welcome - as are both forged and stock removal blades.

2) Timing - the knife must have been made in 2008 - or first shown on bladeforums in 2008 - let's try to keep things current.

3) Ownership - doesn't matter - can be a knife you made, a knife you own or somebody else's knife all-together. I would particularly encourage makers to show what they feel is the best bowie THEY made this year. This is no time to be shy. :)

4) Number of entries - as many as you like that meet the above criteria. We'll run this over the holidays to collect as many entries as we can, then narrow it down to 5 finalists that everyone gets to vote on in an open poll. BUT - Please number your entries and confine all your entries to a single post - this will make the process for selecting finalists MUCH easier. You are not ranking your entries (i.e., your favourite first), just numbering one through however many you tender to facilitate the vote counting. [i.e. - within your post, number your entries 1 through x.]

Also be sure to give us the name of the maker of each knife you enter.

5) - And on that point - I am looking for a volunteer to help keep track of the voting for the selection of finalists. I will caution you that this is a bit tedious, but it really helps to have a backup. Kevin was kind enough to help last year and I would welcome his assitance again, but I know he has a very full plate with all the great work he is doing for the CKCA. [SCRATCH THAT - Marcel has graciously volunteered. My sincere thanks to all that offered.]

My entries below - I am SO looking forward to seeing all of yours.

1) John White, MS - the lines of this piece really speak to me.

2) Bruce Bump, MS - I haven't been able to get this one out of my head. Bruce - we need to talk.

orig.jpg

3) Burt Foster, MS - Full integral camp knife - sheath and matching belt by maker.

orig.jpg

orig.jpg

4) Don Hanson, MS - just picking a favourite Hanson bowie for 2008 would be a daunting task. Here's mine.

orig.jpg

5) Jason Knight, MS Ironwood fighter. Mean and beautiful all at the same time.

orig.jpg

6) Rodigo Sfreddo, JS

Rodrigo continues to turn out innovative interpretations on the integral bowie. This one is stunning:

7) Russ Andrews, MS - Subhilt Stag MS Test Bowie. Note - each ne of those filed spacers is actually a real ferrule - the stag fits into each one. I know this was a aork in progress pic by the owner - I would invite him to send me an updated on if he prefers - and to step forward and take a bow.

NOTE - there are two Josh Smith bowies that MUST be included - his Searles Bowie that he had at Blade and that awesome spearpoint dogbone. I suspect the latter will be nominated by its pround owner, but I have no pic of the former - if someone can send me one, I'd be grateful.

I'd also add the AWESOME D'Holder bowie from the CKCA calendar if Coop could hook me up with a pic.

Thanks Guys n' Gals.

Thanks for the mention Roger but I will have to decline as my plate is full. Someone else is welcome to and please do step up.

I WILL SAY THAT IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO HELP THOSE DOING THE TALLY FOR FINALIST BY NUMBERING YOUR SUBMISSIONS.

Jon, can you edit your Hanson post to designate it as entry #8.

Thanks Kevin.

On the numbering, I actually meant that within each post, they be numered 1 through x. That way we can easily identify each specific knife by the combination of post # and entry # within that post. Since Jon has one entry, his is numbered 1, which can be voted for later as Post 2, entry 1. Or on the case of the Knight bowie that I entered - Post 1 entry 5.

Now, if someone could tell me how to correct my blundering typo in the heading of the thread, I'd be grateful. :o

Roger

PS - Thanks to Marcel for volunteering to help tabulate the votes.

Here are my entries, although not all reside in my collection anymore (for various reasons).

1. Josh Smith MS Dogbone Bowie (this is the one Roger was talking about).

2. Ray Rybar MS Mexican Bowie

3. Gary Root/Ray Rybar MS Dragon Bowie

4. Larry Fuegen MS Southwest Bowie

5. Bailey Bradshaw MS S-guard Bowie. This one needs some special attention. That's because it NO longer exists:mad: It was destroyed by Dutch Customs this year.

6. Jerome Anders MS Shell guard Bowie

Finally one I haven´t shown yet. Better pics will be taken early next year so you´ll have to do with this crappy one by me.

7. Rick Eaton Dogbone Bowie. This is his first ever Dogbone Bowie:cool:

Sorry Roger as I was confused. :o
I hope everyone understands the process before the entries start coming in by the dozens.

#1 Mike Ruth bowie, he calls this his Dog Star pattern, I had to have it.9 5/8ths inch blade, also has a nice temper line,, stainless fittings, great stag with stainless butt plate filed to match the stag.

I'm just a lurker in this sub-forum and tend to hang around the W&SS crowd. However, I do enjoy the wonderful knives on display here and in the gallery from time to time. I have nothing to offer, except the opinion of an objective admirer.

Thus far, the Hanson from the OP gets my vote for a piece that I think is beautiful. Unfortunately - it also looks very functional.

4) Don Hanson, MS - just picking a favourite Hanson bowie for 2008 would be a daunting task. Here's mine.

Thanks kgd lurker or not, your views are most welcome. At present, we're just nominating knives. Once nominations are closed, we'll vote on all the knives presented and select 5 finalists. Once we're down to a final 5, the top knife will be selected from that group.

Definitely some great eye candy to this point.

I edited mine to say #1. Hope that is correct. Roger, are you sure "Baldes forums" is the best title? I still have a full head of hair.

Didn't stop you from going to the Balde show this past June, did it? :D

I crack me up, really I do...

Ok, I'll add some into this thread. Now... I am going to enter them because I took the the photos, and I especially like the images. I have no business choosing favorite knives. (You will notice I reserve portrait mode for Bowies.)
