Bladeforums Bowie Stage 4: Critique and Refinement

Cripes,Joe,we do have similar tastes! :D
I was thinking of lengthening the top arm of the guard as well and a little off the top of the handle to drop it,not a pistol grip but I think you guys can see what I'm saying.
Also a thong tube but only if we stick with a wood handle, which I don't think anybody will like except me with all this talk about ivory and Damascus.:o

I have a monster stick of Amboyna burl among other cool woods, so if i make one, ya know what type of handle materiel Iwill use. Funny part is the chosen handle style does not lend itself all that well to the chosen technique (morticed tang) unless you want to do a frame handle

Yes. I was thinking about the Blade Show as well.
If it could be finished by then (about the first week of June) then all present could see and handle it. Perhaps a maker would display it and sell it off his table for us. It would be a very good venue for it's sale.
The only problem with a collaboration is that it would add to production and project management time considering shipping and determining who is responsible for which task and such.

It will be one of my 5 Journeyman knives :) ;)

Probably with W2 and a whicked hamon.

Yunno Nick, all kidding aside, from my memory, (except the blade was like 12+")doesn't Stephen's rendering looking like the bowie that you are working on right now?

Best Regards,

You are far from the last, my friend. :)

I wouldn't do this one with a mortised handle. Not really sure why you would want one where material choice allows for a single block of something.

Here is the what that blade style looks like when made to adhere to abs cutting comp specs 10"x2". It was the 4th knife I made.

OK, I like everything about this design. I am hereby officially volunteering to be the BF representative to accept this knife, when made, free of charge, and test the absolute heck out of it. I will chop all manner of things with it, and report back. It won't be any kind of noss4 type testing either... real world stuff. Heck, I'll even take time off and go camping with it. Please? ;) :D

Just a thought guys.
Perhaps after the total design is completed we could vote on a maker and actually have this piece made. Chip in to pay for it, sell it and donate the procedes to a worthwile charity.
It would be very interesting seeing it completed step by step via the Forum, and we could actually help an agreed upon worthy cause.

I'm afraid I had slightly jumped the gun here and had already approached a maker a day or two ago with the idea of making the final design, also with progress shots and commentary. If that doesn't progress we can look at other selctions

The idea had crossed my mind to turn it into a possible article for a magazine, and then having created some publicity we could auction it possibly.

I'll keep you updated, and then we'll take if from there.

Cheers,

Stephen

Well good, you can pay for it then! :)

Actually I was going to pay for everything, but I wasn't going to auction it :D

The auction is a good idea and I had not really thought of it, I was just going to have the knife made on the quiet and come back and say "hey, look what your ideas look like in real life!", I was also considering trying to write an article around the process and the finished knife ..... I think with an auction the article can still be done ....... but funding needs a bit more discussion. ;) :D

The only thing I would say is that it would not be right having initially approached the maker to change course on selection .... however the maker could say no, and if he is not one others would have chosen then I could continue down that route, and the join the project down another route aswell!

Stephen

I think that I may join Nick and take a crack at it. That would make a cool story for Balde. You have one made, Nick makes one, Joe the Hack (moi) makesone and whoever else decides to jump in, etc. That could be a lot of fun if we all showed up at Blade with these big honkin' knives:thumbup: If we allmade them to cutting comp specs, then we could try to injure ourselves in the contest.....lol.

I agree that the handle and riccasso need to be the same size,if not it throws the lines off.In my opinion the guard needs to drop below the cutting edge to the same distance that it sets above the spine also. Now with a wood handle as you have pictured here I have a real bad feeling that your weight balance will be way to blade heavey for most peoples liking, you might consider some kind of inset in the but end to counter the balancing (of course that is just my opinion) but this only if you plan on making a thick 5/16 inch thick blade ...

Nick,You are going for JS this year?

Great idea,
Bruce

Great Stephen, sounds like we have a plan. A magazine article had also crossed my mind, however thought we could progress into that if this thing gained traction. This is just the type of thing Blade would be interested in and would definitely increase the marketability of the knife for an auction.
Lots of details to be worked out. Financing should not be a problem as we are not talking about such a large sum of money and the number of members here who sound interested.

Great Job Stephen,it was a great idea from start to finish.I really like the end result, plus your computer animation skills are Excellent.I Tip My Hat to You Bro!

Cheers Buddy, but not finished yet ..... I am working on a couple of variants based on comments in this thread ...... then a final showdown at stage 5!

Stephen

You know, people always complain about "design by committee"...but I think you guys did a bang-up job. I like it!

Ive been playing with plunges lately, and now believe the curved plunge to look amazing in all forms, but I dont know if that was ever up for debate....heres what i think the plunge should look like...ive always though straight plunges or otherwise 100% curvy knives looked odd.
