BladeForums.com Survival Knife & Kit project

Why not the Pocket Survival Pak instead of the SOL? It's more robust, lighter, smaller, and as far as I can tell lacks only the space blanket--which you could sell as an option with the PSP. Plus, with the SOL you only get 8 matches--eight attempts to make fire and only 1 fire tab. With the PSP you get 1000 heavy sparks, and 3 additional fire tabs.

The beauty of the PSP is that is really fits in your pocket, so you always have it with you, not just when you "plan to need it." I supplemented mine with a Photon Freedom, DMT credit card sharpener, and small glass vial of water purifier that Doug Ritter recommended. It all fits in the original package and is still lighter than the PSP.

The SOL lacks the second-most useful thing in the woods (after fire-making ability): string. If you can provide fire and shelter (what the string makes easy), you are 99% saved.

JMHO

RobbW - I think you forgot the TOPS kit I linked in my OP, which would give a redundant fire starting system with the fero & mag rod device. As for string, I'm thinking a 100 foot length of 550 cord would work well, right?

It would work very well. I like the original kit included. As for extras, I would bet most of us have it already and could customize it to our liking.

My bloody wallet is already itching Spark. Looks as though the RC-6 will be out early Feb???

For those of you that haven't seen the Spec Ops brand survival sheath here is a pic (blatantly ripped off from) O.S.K.S. They look perfect for a "all in one" survival PSK too me.

Never used one, but it's about time ehh....;)

Wow, my eyes read that, but my brain passed it right by. As soon as I saw "Tops Knives" I shifted out of "survival pack mode" and into "knife mode". Sorry about that.

Yeah, 100' paracord should more than do it--for a debris hut, lean-to shelter, snare/dead fall. 550 has the advantage of being flexible for the user. It can be used as is, or the core can be removed by someone looking to use it for lighter tasks or needing to pack it down to a smaller size.

This is really well thought out and will make a good kit. I'm eager to see how the project progresses.

50 feet of paracord would be plenty with the bundle, and if I were to get one I think I'd want an rc-4 instead of the 6.
A food getting kit as well, maybe a mini fishing kit and some wire?

I've been trying to decide between those lengths myself. Both have some pros/cons, I'm traditionally a fan of the 4"...

This project isn't happening today, or this week, so we've got time to discuss things.

With regards to the RC-4 vs RC-6, I have Spec Ops Brand Survival Sheaths hanging around here already that will fit the RC-6 model. I don't have ones for the RC-4, and since the product is discontinued by Spec Ops Brand, I don't know availability.

Good idea. Let me know if I can help. Since retiring from the Go-Bag/Go-Kit project, I've winnowed down my 'survival' concepts considerably. Just one thing. I take exception to AMK for the fact that though it's nice to have a stash of 'First Aid' stuff on hand, training is left out of the equation too often. There is no kit out there that makes much sense in a real medical emergency.
Look here if you need to..

some type of sholder bag that would fit the canteen and survival kit would be nice
custom shoulder bag made to fit the stuff with blade forums survival embroydered on it

I am definitely on board if the price is right. I'd like to know how much it would cost us though.

This is a sweet idea! Maybe offer it with or without the knife. I have a couple of knives that would fit this sheath already in the 5" - 6" range.

instead of the hard gi 1 qt. canteen, go with the gi 2 qt. collapsable canteen. noise dissapline (slosh, slosh) and double the h2o. also takes up less space.

I'm definitely in on this. I'd like to see the RC6 (mostly because I've already ordered an RC4:D). I'd love to see the guyotdesigns bottle instead of nalgene too.

I don't want to make it too complicated, but maybe two versions would be the route to go -- a deluxe version and the bare bones version. The simple version could just have something like knife/sheath, firesteel, paracord, tinder and water container/pot; whereas the deluxe could be more diverse. Just a thought anyway; either way I'm interested.

Great idea Spark.
If you are using this thread as a pre-order, I am definitely in on this
I agree with XMP on preferring the Stainless bottle over the Nalgene - much more versatile / durable.
