Bladeforums for snobs? I don't think so.

So let's have it. Is BF only for "special" knives, or what? Is there a club list somewhere, or are we here to talk about blades that work well?

Not at all, man. Like SaintlyBrees put it, "there is a place for all knives in these discussions."

But you gotta remember that everyone's got an opinion on blades, and sometimes they don't wanna hear yours.

I work with a guy who's carried a S&W combo edge for about 3 years. It looks like a beefed up Kershaw Scallion, got the holes in the blade and everything. He swears by that knife, and couldn't care less when I showed him my ZT 0566. Different strokes, ya know?

By the way, you can't even argue on price with cheap Chinese made knives with a logo on them. Knives that are ALSO cheap, yet great quality:

- ESEE Zancudo
- Ontario RAT 1 and 2
- Countless American made KAI products
- American made Buck products
- Ontario Utilitac (Hush Grownstar, I was getting to it! LOL)
- Inexpensive American made Gerbers (even though most of them are Chinese made now)

So, there's not really a viable argument to be had as to why you'd pick Mtech or S&W Wal-Mart knives over any of the above. They are all better made, many are American made*, and the steel isn't in question. I don't pick up a Buck 110 and think (huh...I wonder if this heat-treat is crappy?). I don't pick up a Kershaw Leek and think "Ohhhh, there's been a lot of tests done that show that this isn't actually the steel KAI claims it is, better put it back and get an Mtech instead."

I mean, come on now.

*or at least not made in a xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (redacted to keep this non-political)

pfft, we don't all have $4000/year budget for knives...

No indeed. But even if I'm buying a $20 knife, I pay attention to how its made, and from what. There are inexpensive knives (yay, good) and then there are cheap knives (bad).

There is always a place in our hearts for cheap beater knives. We may love our Reeves, Hinderers, Mayos etc. But when in comes time to tear down some dry wall or something many are going to put our nicer blades away for a S&W.

Quiet, of course I'm opinionated. We all are :). My point is not to call out another member, but a discussion was started and I didn't want to start this discussion back and forth in someone else's thread.

I have no agenda, but I'm tired of the bs at times. I understand that cheap imported knives are not the bees knees, but to rather spend good money on a blade and not be sure what steel your getting just doesn't make sense to me.

If by discussion, you mean "I took issue with someone saying my cheap crap knife was a cheap crap knife." then you're spot on.

What BS are you tired of? This is Bladeforums. Anyone could spend five minutes in ANY thread, and realize that he's not going to get a ton of props for having a cheaply made flea-market knife. I mean, is that what you want? Do you want people to respect your knives? Why? I don't expect anyone to care what I own, and neither do any of the other members here. Having expensive knives doesn't make us special. Not wanting or respecting cheaply made imported knives doesn't make us snobs.

Again, you keep making mention of this "You spend a bunch of money, and aren't sure what steel you're getting." If you have proof that the big companies are somehow fleecing us, then post it up. Otherwise, stop attempting to make the claim. It's bullshit, and an attempt to take attention away from how crappy Mtechs and S&W knives are. Spyderco, Benchmade, KAI, Buck, ESEE, Ontario, Becker, ETC. aren't selling knives and misrepresenting their steel. If they were, that would be a huge topic here, and those companies wouldn't have the respect that they do.

No matter what the intention, it is in poor taste to call the kid out like that. I would remove the name of the person you are quoting. The thread this was taken from was a bit heated and people sometimes push a little too far. But hey, thats just me.

Back on topic, we all like varied knives with difference price points. If someone calls a knife junk, lets hope the person has either personal experience with a knife or has done the proper research. Hell, thats how I got hooked on BladeForums.

Don't you know that "b" in the word bladeforums stand for Benchmade

"a" stand for Kai

And "s" stand for Spyderco

You can only talking about products from these three company here whether you will receive an infraction.

All aboard the internet hate train.

Quiet, I'm going to spell it out for you slowly, and one more time, then I'm done. I did not ever say a reputable company had concerns with ht or steel used. It was a discussion that was about a new company and a mindset that was put out there that it doesn't matter just spend your money and don't worry if it's bs. If you want to spend your money that way fine.

Don't put words in my mouth. You try to put quote marks on something I have never said, so find my post that you're quoting me or stfu. You've done it a few times now, and I'm getting pissed. Shut your mouth if you don't have anything else constructive to say.

Hey, thanks for the thread! It really shows how mature you are about the whole issue.

I love the hate that you get for having your favorite folder companies in your name. Why don't you call yourself "MtechSmithandWesson"?

I'm just not sure why OP has an issue that many folks here enjoy steak instead of the McDonalds dollar menu.

I'm picking up what you're laying down. I think maybe the OP felt a little attacked in the previous thread. I didn't visit it, but that's the way it sounds. I think he just wanted people that use cheaper blades to chime in so he (the OP) could prove a point, and I get that. But calling someone out was poor judgement. Even if he hadn't called out and quoted someone, one should buy and use what works for them regardless of what anybody thinks. There's always going to be someone that doesn't like your tool or someone that thinks his tool is better.

There a good inexpensive knives, then there are bad ones. Then there are the ones that make you say "Holy Mother of Pearl, what was I thinking!"

I generally do not buy "inexpensive" knives as I can afford nicer ones. Most of my knives are between $75 and $150. I do have a Strider SnG, and a Brian Tighe, but otherwise my portfolio is on the low to medium end of the spectrum. It is a well known fact (if you will) around here that Gerber, S&W, Mtech, Schrade, etc make crappy knives currently. That is not to say that they are terrible, and for the uninformed/non-knife person they get the job done well enough. BUT, for those of us who are knife aficionados know that for the same price as those crappy brands listed above, you can get a good knife like a Spyderco/Byrd, Kershaw, CRKT, Cold Steel etc. That's how I found this place, doing research on knives before I bought.

I've noticed that a lot of the people on the forum are quite young and/or new to the knife world, and don't like being told that their knife is a piece of crap. If it gets the job done and you're happy, that is what is most important. In life, you have to grow some thick skin and ignore the haters/snobs etc. Remember, many of us are older, have full time jobs and can afford nicer things. In other words, try not to be so sensitive, and take peoples opinions with a grain of salt. Remember, its the interwebz, and some people just have a big e-penis they like to show everyone.

So you don't want to have a discussion? Seems you had no problem before. Instead you just said BF doesn't talk about S&W or Mtech. I know you have enough money to throw around without carrying about it. So keep buying kid! Come on, before you have bills and kids of your own.

And to those that think I should take out the name of a poster due to his age? Come on, he's old enough to discuss on the forum.

This thread isn't constructive, so I'm not sure what you expect me to say that's constructive. By the way, using quotation marks, I was paraphrasing what you claimed, since I didn't want to use all of your poor spelling and grammatical errors. Sorry. Next time I'll just quote you exactly.

Anyway, ok, so let me see if I have this straight. Questioning the steel, you are actually only speaking of the Chinese company in the other thread? And that's it? Well, hey, then I stand corrected. In any case, I don't understand your point then. Plenty of people were making it clear that they wouldn't be buying that company's products in that other thread. I certainly will not be spending $350 on a Chinese knife. SpydercoBench made it pretty clear that he wasn't in the market for it either, and even pointed out knives that were less expensive and made by an established, reputable company that he'd buy instead. So, what exactly is your deal other than being pissy because another member said they wouldn't waste money on cheap Chinese knives? Do you expect to change his mind? Or mine? Or anyone else here's who wouldn't give a rack full of cheap imported crap a second glance?

Oh, right, if we don't like the same cheap garbage knives, then we're all snobs. That's what you insinuated in your first post, after all. Well then, call me a snob and pass the Grey Poupon, old bean!

Speaking of which, it's lunchtime!

I think you have said it better than I. Thanks.

He wasn't the OP. It was a thread about a completely different knife from "ReaTe," a new Chinese maker with a price of $350. Morrow even jumped in and reminded us to stay on topic.

I don't have any opinion on your knives but that movie is absolutely horrible. You can do better. :D
