Blades for Survival

Walnut

Hoodoo

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.

Well Ustulina, how's it feel to be king-sized? At least you got it on your second guess, which is better than I would have done!

Now that I know that our discussion is not above Schrades, I have a nice little knife (name unknown). The blade is only two inches long and folds into a black plastic handle. It is really a humble little knife, but it is by far the best I have ever owned. One time down in Central Mexico I was cutting bamboo to make a whistle (well, trying anyway). After cutting down a nice thick piece, then carving it up into a bunch of little pieces, then carving sundry details into the section I finally settled on, this litte guy was still cutting the bamboo like butter. A friend approached me and mentioned that he had never seen steel that kept that kind of an edge for so long when cutting bamboo. (The high silica content dulls blades quickly.)

The short of it was that several men gathered 'round and tried to barter my little Schrade right out from under me. I held firm, explaining that it was a gift from my brother and that it would be an offense to him if I sold it.

I now carry it everywhere. It is the "every-day" knife that I referred to. My larger Schrade I only carry on Sundays because it looks better (gotta dress up for church, of course!) and I'm less likely to need a knife on Sundays.

Whew, I finally told my first knife story. I guess that means I'm in...

yeah it's humiliating to be working on a msters degree in wood products and not recognize walnut straight off. For whatever reason, walnut seemed out of place for michigan, but that's malarky
