Blog Update

Yup, for the price and size they can't be beat. I've got the plastic case, the external roll up antenna and an earpeice. I was looking at the CCrane pocket shortwave, but this little Countycomm radio is fine for my purposes.

Never got around to getting one but I always wondered if they were all they were cracked up to be. How is it without the accessory antenna?

A few years ago in my bosses office he had a corkboard with business cards, pics, misc scribbled junk...and a retractable 1" blade or so dagger stuck in the board that said Tekna on it:D I don't remember if it was retractable or if it was just a dagger, but I remember yanking it out one day and saying "this is cool!".

Was it the Tekna Micro-Knife in my Tekna Article?

You can see it here.

The "sheath" retracted, so it was like a poor man's out the front switchblade. The blade stayed in place and didn't move but the sheath retracted. California is, from all reports I have ever heard, a beautiful place. But damn they must go through some bedpads with all of the bedwetters they have there.

California considered it a switchblade once it was "examined" in the People vs. Quattrone which you can also read on my website here.

re the battery caddy's, was there much difference in the quality? any idea how these compare to the County Comm battery caddy?

I would go to my blog and see the distributor for the Moonglow versions which CountyComm doesn't have anyway. They are great.

Don, thanks for the blog. Just started reading it a few days ago, some good articles. Have to agree with the battery caddies as well, I ordered a bunch from John & Denise @ Be Prepared To Survive a few months back for our Jeep, truck, both bags, camping, etc.

I bought one from them as well! Along with some other stuff back in October or November, very nice people.

Wife and I are getting some "head lamps" for this summer, the Tikka Plus2 has been suggested by more than one or two people. Thanks again for sharing your information with us.
Be safe.

I always thought they looked dorky. Then I finally purchased one and I was like, "How did I make it all these years without one of these damned things?!?!?!"

Thanks!

If you are so inclined, when you reach the bottom of the page, there is a link to older posts. This blog, in the grand scheme of things, is not really that old. My website it about 11 years old now, if I remember correctly. The blog is still a puppy. If I ever get off of my ass and update the website, I might take what I want off of the blog and put it into article form and morph it into the website. I have not decided yet.

Don...I am so inclined!! I will make a cup of coffee and read on tonight.

Just fine. The antenna brings in some SW stations in better, although SW is always hit or miss unless you've got a high end or bigger radio. The roll up antenna is so small it's worth keeping with the radio I think. It can be clipped to the fixed antenna on the radio (or any radio) and be hung outside a window while you're inside listening...or if you're in a basement and having trouble receiving anything, find a way to get the antenna above ground through a window or opening and you should be able to receive underground. It's like 15' long I think, so there are a lot of options.

I'm pretty sure it was that one. Once that guy left the business without any warning, we opened back up two weeks later and his office was cleaned out, along with that little Tekna blade on his cork board:thumbdn: AND he took a big ass old Mag Lite I had my eye on..

And after reading little further down, I like the Urban Shiv. To me, that's a real self defense tool. Simple and effective. ESEE may have to do something like that some day.

An ESEE Shiv neck knife the same size as an Izula..... That would be awsome! Even with a hollow style handle that we can cord wrap, etc. Ohhhh that would be sweet!

DH1, how is the reception on this? I have been looking for something along these lines for our bags, have not seen this model or brand yet. Thanks for the information.

The reception is just fine, I have no complaints. Like I said, a CCrane may be better, but they are more expensive (and a little larger/heavier I think). The countycomm radios are just no frills receivers...and the little LED light is a plus. The sensitivity is very good also, way better than any cheap $9 drug store pocket radio you might have owned.

I carry mine in my pack in case I need to hear weather updates and news if there is no power or better radio available.

I have always wanted to get one of them-there radios from CC. :)

Put some more stuff up on the blog last night.

Probably do something on it Tuesday afternoon as well.

Speaking of which, can that thing get regular AM radio stations or what?

I just took it out and put the batteries in to give it a little test after being thrown around in my pack for the past few months..works perfectly.

AM and FM come in just fine, the SW freqs are limited compared to my big CC Radio SW that I've got here also. I think countycomm has the freqs listed in their description.

But I'm picking up the two major AM stations here perfectly, and most of the smaller guys to.

EDIT:
I recall seeing countycomm list a "new and improved" radio which looked exactly the same but had the Kaito logo on it, and I think it came in a box instead of a foil military type bag. Not sure what the "improvements were" though...the one I have is the first version they had for sale (which is also still for sale I think).

ty for sharing this blog, great as always.

your blog on the la griffe made me go get one. love your insight.

I love the battery caddies. One of the best inventions of our time to be so simple.

I've had my eye on those for a while but haven't ordered. I wish they made one for doubles of CR123 cells as I generally buy them shrink-wrapped in doubles: http://www.batteryjunction.com/titanium-cr123a-double.html.

Cool blog, Don. I'd never seen it.

I have been eyeing them[ScotteVest]....

I'd been looking at them for a while but just couldn't swallow the $pill$. Then I came across a post talking about a "secret sale" or something like that where several products were 40% off and I couldn't resist. I needed a good jacket for the snow anyway so I bought the "Scott Jordan Signature System" (Revolution Plus and Fleece 5.0 Jacket combo) and a Microfleece Pullover. I got all three for $245

I absolutely love the pullover. It's my go-to item. The Revolution Plus is awesome, too. My only complaint is that it doesn't have lined pockets to warm your hands. It's a great rain jacket, too as without the inner jacket it's not too warm. The Fleece 5.0 is good and I wear it a lot but it doesn't wear all that great. The elbows are showing wear and it has little fuzz balls at the normal wear spots... I need one of those lint shavers! It is almost two years old, though, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Overall I really like the stuff but wouldn't be willing to pay retail. Next time I see a good sale I'll buy a couple more micro-fleece pullovers.

I should not that I don't wear these in real cold. I live in CA and don't experience winter the way most of you do....

Oh, and was bummed that there was no spot for a flashlight... dorky, I know.

Not dorky at all. I thought headlamps were dorky until I used one. :D

I have been wanting a Scott eVest cotton hoody with all of the pockets but $70.00 is a stiff shot for a hoody. I know it has all of the pockets and doo-dad appeal, but it's still a hoody, after all. Perhaps I will get one some day. It would go great on cold days under my Woolrich Algerian. :)

Ha! Me too until I realized the utility. Now I wear one with pride!

Exactly. Wait until one of their big sales then pull the trigger. I'm fine with the $245 I spent on my three items. There's NO way I'd pay the $425 retail....
