Got the latest SMKW cat yesterday and there on the front cover is BLUE dyed stag!My first reaction is they ruined a bunch of nice stag. But heck,I go kicking and screaming along to anything new.Maybe it will grow on me.I always considered blue a favorite color. But Sambar stag?I dont know. What do you guys think.Maybe peer pressure will turn me around.

For some reason, I think I've seen or heard of this before. Maybe back in the '90s (possibly from Smoky Mountain Knife Works; think I was receiving their catalog at that time). Had the same reaction as you (). Wasn't sure what to think of it. I hope, maybe they had some 'less than ideal' stag with something they wanted to 'hide'. Otherwise, I'd prefer the warm look of the real thing.

Ugh, I guess it's a way to use stag that otherwise doesn't look so good - better than dyeing it green I suppose. But what's with that shield? Is it supposed to be a mushroom? An upside down ink bottle?

To take a section of antler from the most majestic deer on Earth and then dye it blue is sacrilege to me!

wouldn't touch it. If I get natural handle material, I want it to look natural

What about potassium permanganate dyed antler, like was standard in the "old days?"

How about the "burnt stag" and "red stag" offerings from GEC?

What about bone??? Most bone is dyed.

There is lots of wood that is either "color enhanced" or straight up dyed. What about that?

I agree that the blue is "off-putting," but some dyed natural handle material looks very nice, much better than the natural...

:eek: Not something that appeals to me at all, but I am sure someone will buy it! Different strokes for different folks! ;)

I dont know I kinda like it. Its different. I love my regular stag knives but this one is interesting. And the stag on it doesn't look too bad, though I am sure not all the knives will have stag like that.

I have to stay with your initial reaction Seals; although I did really like their red stag and still do!

Burnt stag is a natural color in my view, as is dyed amber stag. Blue, Orange, Green, etc. is not. Bone is dyed and it has always been dyed. In the 1920's, they weren't making jigged bone knives with neon yellow handles. I'm not dissing anyone else's tastes, but to me there is a difference between "traditional" and modern. Traditional stag handles have been done the same way for years, although they are modified from what is cut from the deer's mount. Same with bone...although it's been altered (dyed), it's been dyed that way for years.

If the pricing reflected that they were dying otherwise inferior "waste" stag, I'd be all for it - similar to "Second Cut". Not sure if it's reflected in that $95 price - I'm unfamiliar with Case's limited edition pricing structure. Not sure if I would get it myself, though. That being said, the blade etch is way more off-putting than the handle scale.

Different, but 100% not my personal cup of tea.
