Blues' 2009 Blade Show Haul

Elliott,

Glad you and Tina made it back safe and sound. Thanks for adding the picture of your John Howser. I like the lines when open. Killer swedge also.

Ken

Thank you, Ken. I appreciate your good thoughts. Great chatting with you earlier (as always).

That's quite a group there! I don't think I could pick a favorite!

Congrats!

It was good meeting you at the show, Bill. I'm gonna have to try that Belvedere one of these days. ;)

The first maker I hooked up with at the Blade Show was Rick Menefee and a nicer guy would be hard to find. Rick brought a modified wharncliffe shadow pattern for me to look at but because I was unsure of my potential commitments to makers who might be bringing knives to the show, I hesitated to purchase first thing Thursday afternoon.

The good thing is that Rick and Kerry Hampton swapped knives and Kerry ended up with the knife I had first right of refusal on. (And the khnutbuster that Kerry traded was a sweet knife for Rick to end up with. I had examined it myself on Thursday evening.)

Having purchased the Bret Dowell knife from LarryM, I couldn't let Bret get all the Oklahoma braggin' rights so I just purchased this little beauty off the net a few minutes ago. I guess I either missed it at Rick's table, he hadn't put it out yet or Julie already had a binder on it. Anyway, a day late and a dollar short but I'm makin' up for my mistake now.

Here's the knife...A 3 3/4" Dogleg Jack with spear blade and natural canvas micarta. I'd have taken it home from the show had I seen it at the time. Hope this makes up for my tardiness, Rick. It's always a pleasure to support the efforts of up and coming makers, especially when they are good guys to down a beer with to boot! ;)

Oh yeah,

That one looks sweet Elliott. Yup and Rick is a great guy. I very much enjoyed meeting him at Blade.

As a matter of fact, it was also good to meet Todd Davidson. All the knives from both of these guys were made well and looked great and it looks like they got it going to me.

I have a couple of Todd's early stuff and both are fine but he keeps getting better from all the knives I played with. Picked up a small one from Rick at the show. Calvin went crazy over it so I let him have it, since I went ahead and ordered another from Rick.

I agree, Gus. Meeting Todd was a blast and I'm only sorry that Gig got his grubby little fingers on that shadow before I did. ;)

Agree, his work was very clean.

As for Calvin, well, he had a smile on his face every time I saw him. Could be because this time around he could actually enjoy himself instead of manning a table.

He has not seen it yet, but the Model 2 Brend is Gig's (if he wants it. :D)
When we were talking about those two Thursday night after dinner, I think I noticed a little drool when he mentioned the Model 2.:p

That's a great image of Rick's knife that you captured there, Elliott! I tell ya, that Menefee really knows how to make a hand-friendly knife.

Kerry,

I don't have the knife yet so I copied the image from Arizona Custom Knives website.

I'll bet it'll be even better in the hand than the images suggest. Can't wait.

I spent some time in the shop last night touching up a few of these knives so that they're ready for carry.

I shoulda figured that out when I didn't see any treated lumber under it. :p That's going to be a dandy knife for you Elliott...enjoy!

I guess I'm gonna have to upgrade my background. (Hey, it used to be a blue bed sheet.) :p

Thanks for the nice comments.

Rick Menefee's dogleg just arrived here an hour or so ago and I'm really pleased with it.

At 3.75" closed it's a great size for the hand and its 2.25 oz. weight makes it very pocket friendly.

On top of that, Rick radiused everything on the knife so there's not a sharp corner anywhere.
Even the spine/backspring is rounded for comfort in the hand while cutting. (Just don't try to stand it up on its backspring. ;))

And speaking of cutting, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the knife arrived sharp and ready for use. Just barely touching the edge to my finest hone brought up a super edge.

Half stop was well executed and no blade play whatsoever.

Looks like I'm gonna join some of the folks on this forum and become a big fan of our Oklahoma boys Bret and Rick.:thumbup:

Here's a few images I just snapped on the "treated lumber" that Kerry loves so much:

PS: Luciano, here's an example of one I don't mind without a shield! ;)

I made a computer wallpaper out of those pictures. Gives me something to look at while waiting for my turn to come up for one just like that one. The only thing I may change is if Blues would send me a chunk of that treated lumber . I would get it stabilized and have Rick use that. :D

Rob, don't know that you can afford it. It's pretty rare stuff. :p

I'll tell you this, (since our tastes generally run in parallel), you're gonna love this knife.

Nice looking knife Elliott. I think the rounded spine/backspring is kinda cool on certain patterns, this being one of them. Nice score!
