Blur Regrind..

I didn't realize a Sharp Maker was a required piece of equipment for knife users to own. Whatever did they do before these were invented? :p

I do have the right tools....for everything except recurves which brings us full circle back to why Tom has my knife. :D

I suspect they didn't buy recurves. :p "Crock sticks," then, if the Sharpmaker is too brand-specific. :)

Seriously, I'm just trying to figure this out... I had to replace a seatbelt the other day. I wasn't "annoyed" that it used a giant Torx bolt instead of hex-head...but I did have to go out and buy the right tool for that job. Likewise, I use a special tool for sharpening chainsaw teeth. Another for lawn-mower blades. Maybe I'm just weird...I don't try to sharpen everything on my Japanese water-stones. :D

I have a Sharpmaker because I have lots of recurves. I love 'em. I'd no sooner give them up because they are "harder to sharpen," than I would go back to 440a because the new steels are "harder to sharpen."

Like my daddy used to say, "measure twice..." no, wrong saying. "Use the right tool for the right job." Yeah, that's it. :)

the reason i do not have a sharpmaker is because i dont have

good reason i think :D :p

Here is a picture of my personal Blur. I didn't do the swedge as I wasn't too concerned about the looks. Just wanted PERFORMANCE!!

I took mine down to .007"!! :)

Yea it would really be great if we were able to have someone's of Tom's talents doing thousands of re-grinds on a daily basis. Wait, wouldn't that be more of a a semi-custom knife?

I'm unsure a blade shape can be a "gimmick", maybe a deeper explanation is in order?

Wow, please don't take offense at what I said. It was a compliment to Tom not a bash on Kershaw.

As far as the blade shape being a gimmick, I guess opinions vary. I have used a regular Kershaw Bump in the past (green Ti handle) for a couple weeks. I cut the normal stuff that I cut in a given week or two and found no advantage by having a recurve. My Paramilitary cut everything just as well. If I compare it to a hawkbill blade it's not even close. The curve is not enough of a curve (like most hawkbill blades) to hold rope or other things in place. I guess I just don't get recurves. I've tried many and just never found any advantage.

I just think some people think they look cooler than a normal blade.

I think time has proven that for about 95% of tasks a nice straight blade with a bit of belly cannot be beaten.

The other 5 % of tasks can be tackled with a wharncliffe or a hawkbill.

Mr. Krein, is that logo of yours laser etched into the blade?

Mr. Krein how much does a regrind cost. Just a range would be nice. Thanks In advance.

Paul, blades under 4" are $35.00. ZDP-189 or S60V add $10.00. Return shipping/package is $10.00

I hope that helps.

Eh, not that good a reason. ;) For the about what you paid for the Platinum, you could have had one ($53, NGK). Less than the cost of about half of Kershaw's knives, which are already dirt cheap.

I'm just saying it's a good tool; the only Spyderco product I own. Recurves are a breeze with this thing. I wish I'd bought one long before I did.

I get the feeling you're not going to be satisfied until everyone buys a Sharp Maker and declares their new found love of sharpening recurves. :p

You won't get me.....ever. :D

It's all about personnel preference...think how boring this place would be if all like exactly the same stuff.

That's cool. :D And I think that's the reasoning people people should state; personal preference, as opposed to (inadvertently) scaring people off with them being too hard to sharpen.

I personally find their utility to exceed combo blades; a belly and a bit of a hook closer in. BTW, this was never meant to be some kind of campaign to promote the Sharpmaker or recurves...okay, maybe it was, a little ;) . I dunno... I like them, and I guess I'm just a bit surprised about all the "recurve haters." Seems to me one is missing out on some of Onion's cooler designs if one limits oneself to drop points. *shrugs*

I just got mine today! WOW!!! the grinds are amazing the super clean and the added swedge just gives it a super nice touch.

Won't get me either. I get to have my recurves AND I get to maintain my disdain for the Sharpmaker;). I use an Edge Pro with a 1/2 in. 800 grit stone for finishing those really tight recurves..... oh, I also just got a nice set of diamond stones. I feel the dark side calling :D.

Glad to hear you are happy with the work! Let us know how she performs for you... go slow at first to get a feel for how she cuts.

Well I had some boxes around the house that needed to be broken down so I gave her a shakedown. It was truly amazing how little resistance the cardboard puts up to this knife. Its almost like it isn't even there. I broke down enough cardboard that even the S60V did lost its edge a bit so I took it to my SM re profiled it to 15per side which only took a minute or two then finished it up with my UF rods on 20per side and in under 5 minutes went from pretty dull to hair whittling sharp. Now you have me thinking about a ZDP-189 delica just to have it reground.

I got mine today. It's perfect. Exactly what I wanted and nasty sharp. I really like this knife....looking forward to working it a bit.

Tom,

The work you did on the ZDP Leek was also exactly what I wanted.

Thanks !!!

To be fair to the recurve.....I'm going to carry my untouched S60V Blur blem for a week after I carry the one I just got back from Tom.

Don't even start on me riffraff. :p
