Anyone have any thoughts on the 710 being too large for EDC?

By EDC I mean normal office job type work. Not in LE or military.
Just simple normal everyday use in a large metropolitan city.

Do ppl get intimidated when you pull it out?

I think a lot of people are simply clowning around when they overreact to your knife. Or trying to jerk your chain. I think the real question is: are you intimidated by all the propaganda you hear about carrying a knife bigger than your little finger ?

If I wanted to ban or heavily restrict knives, I'd be right here every day spinning the wonders of small knife ownership.

Personally, I think it will be fine. I haven't noticed any correlation between the size of the knife and the number of negative reactions evoked. The main trick is just to use it discretely - no flicking it open with your wrist/arm, keeping the cuts as controlled as possible, etc. And as far as office/urban carry, I'd say the 710 is one of the best if you want to carry a fairly big knife. For a knife its size, it's quite compact, slim, carries well, and slips comfortably in and out of your pocket.

not at all!!!
the 710 is a great edc
i personnaly don't make a great difference with a mini-grip once they are in my pocket, but i do when i'm slicing my bread : a lot easier with my 710:thumbup:

I think it's more important how people view the user not the knife.
People that know me are not at all worried about what knife I carry.
If I was some crazy eyed ranting devilish random passerbyer they'd probably think "Look at that nut with the knife!"

The 710 is a big knife. A mini-grip or an osbone 940 would be better suited to an office environment.

If you are happy with the 710 just carry and use it. Like others have said don't make a big production about pulling it out and using it. You can't please every one especially the PC crowd.

If its legal to carry a 710 where you are - and your boss doesn't throw a hissy - then you should tell anyone who doesn't like it to kiss your ankle. Seriously. Fat liberal women who recoil at the sight of a knife don't ask your permission to be fat and liberal, do they? Screw 'em. :)

I don't think its too large, but I like a lighter knife when wearing my office/ work clothing and carry a BM 940 Osborne or Combat Elite RRF instead of my 710. On weekends, however, anything goes.

I too work in an office enviroment and have found that what I do with the knife is more important than how big it is. Thumbing open even a small knife seems to have the most negative effect on sheeple. I think the click scares em. However, if I pull out a large knife to open a package and ease it open, no one seems to pay much attention. If it's legal, and you like it carry it...

You can always carry two knives - a big scary folder for cutting stuff, and a small SAK or Ladybug to use in front of the fat, liberal, divorced women in your office. :)

I used to EDC the sh*t out of my 710! It was never a problem. Truth be told, I'm not a small fellow, but I also came in under the weight limit when it came time to qualify for Bouncer College...so the 710 should be a reasonable EDC choice for most folks.

I EDC a Benchmade Ambush in an urban and office environment.

I think it is about the same size and blade length as the 710.

Works just fine for me.

There is no such thing as a knife too large to EDC. Carry two or three of different sizes. If the social environment is not apropriate for the particular knife in question, then choose one of the others.

normally i would say a 3.9" folder is too big but it has little belly which makes it much more friendly.
good decision IMHO

i EDC'd a 710 for several years. i think it's perfect for EDC. especially considering that they made the blade 3.9" it's like they knew alot of folks had to stay under 4"

I have mine in my pocket right now at my desk. No one is screaming. I think its all good :) I do keep a Swiss Army trekker in my desk drawer as my "I need to borrow a knife from you Mr Knife Collector" knife...

It’s a large knife to be sure, but for its size I don’t think that it looks “threatening” at least compared to some other knives.

I don’t know if that makes any sense. I’ve had bad experiences with reactions to my Benchmade 615, but not with the 710.

The 710 follows "traditional" lines, that´s why it looks so nice. The 615 f. e. seems somehow fat and overbuildt.

Compare the sizes to traditional folders and SAKs, some of "our" beloved ones are really big. If you get used to them, you forget about it.

If it feels comfort in your hands and in your pocket, ok.

I wouldn't even think of carrying something like that to my office.

Outside of work though, I carry an even bigger knife than the 710. ;)

It's all about discretion. No knife is too large to EDC, but some are easier to use without stares and comments by others (if you care about that sort of thing).
