BM 710 - Too Large for EDC?

If it is legal and OK by your management, by all means carry it.

I think it is an excellent EDC. It carries flat and light.

Yeah, around here I get hit in two ways. Seattle has a 3.5 inch rule and work has a 3inch rule.

I had a got 36-24-36 bombshell type coworker ask me "Is that a Benchmade 710 with that hard D2 steel in you're pocket, or are you just glad to see me".

Carry it. Chicks dig it.

I'm swimming against the current here, but I wouldn't carry the 710 in an office environment. The other day I was waiting for my son outside of his high school for him to finish track practice. I cut up an orange for him with my 710 thinking I hope the school cop doesn't see me and have an issue. I am also thinking that I shouldn't have to worry about that, but still trying to be discreet and sort of hide what I'm doing.

My point is that I wouldn't have worried, had I brought an SAK that day. Under no circumstances would I pull the 710 out of my pants in the office. You are just asking for trouble IMHO -- even if it is legal.

From a practical standpoint, I think the 710 is a little big for dress pants. I like a Kershaw Leek or maybe a Bradley Alias II for that. Even then, I'm careful about it. The last couple of times I've used a knife in the office world, I held it half-open concealed in my hand.

Heck, I remember a lady getting upset about a coworker's serrated ladybug....

Long before I purchased a 710, I carried an AFCK (and a SAK) in an office environment. I usually kept the AFCK in a pocket of my suit coat.

I endeavor not to let other folks' ignorance, amorality and/or irrational fears determine my behavior.

A 710 isn't even a very big knife. I used to carry one, in an office, and only had one person say something about it. She threatened to tell our manager, who then walked by with a large folder clipped to his pocket. The issue was dropped.

I now work in a different office, and either carry a Spyderco Military or an Emerson Super CQC-7. My current office is out in the middle of nowhere and is staffed entirely by fit conservatives with common sense, so it might not be a fair comparrison.

I rarely have to use a knife at work, anyway. Most packaging and whatnot can be opened with a scissors which can be found at almost any desk or work area. Save the big folders for an emergency, leave it in your pocket and it won't be an issue.
