BM Does the Spyderhole Better!

Ah, no, not trolling. Bemused by jihadi behaviors? Guilty.

Do you think you are changing the world or saving Spyderco one thread at a time with your posts or something grandiose like that?

Your posts are also for entertainment only even if the only one entertained by them is yourself.;)

OMG. I feel like a liberal now. I think I will apply a liberal dose of Heinz ketchup on my French fries.

SOLUTION to sharp Spyderhole= take a white Sharpmaker stick or some other very fine ceramic sharpening stick and run in around the inside and outside edges of the Spyderhole to polish out the roughness/sharpness, you still dont' get a truly chamfered hole and you take away the sharpness, simple solution to a minor problem, no charge for that one:D

What is the solution to the chamfered Benchmade hole?

Just another addition to this great debate. Anyone ever notice how MOST Spydercos have a somewhat humpbacked (for lack of a better term) design at the part of the blade the hole is in, making it even easier to use the hole, due to the positioning of it, also on many models handle is somewhat narrower top to bottom, this all makes the hole easier to get to. Other brand knives with round holes or oval ones, lacking the "hump" are not as easy to open because the hole is not in as good a position. In fact on an essentially linear blade such as an Emerson CQC-7 I'd prefer thumbstuds or disks because simply grinding a hole into that blade would be terrible ergonomically, whereas on a Spyderco Military or Delica the hump puts the hole in optimal position for thumb engagement:D One more thing I think I'm then only person on here that really like the "cobra hood" but I think it was the fact that it was overkill that killed that design.

Best cure for a BM, BUY a Spyderco, or an EMERSON:D And I just have to say that if it's not a lockback I'm going to flick it open anyway, gets better crowd response.

I am late to the party....anybody banned yet?? :D

As to the original question: BM didn't improve on: A.) the new BM models are not champfered as far as I know. B.) and more importantly, the original Spyderco models were champfered, but they were functionally inferior, this is why they are not champfered anymore.....so much for improvement.

Not only Benchmade used the Hole without crediting Spyderco, they call it Dejavoo  How pathetic is that :D  :thumbdn:

" You just might need to take a second look, the Dèjávoo is eye catching. Combining form and function, we have teamed up with Bob Lum to create a powerful design cutting tools. The Dèjávoo goes round-hole for openers, is well balanced, and has high bevels for cutting utility. Premium components such as fully contoured G10 handle scales, phosphor bronze washers, titanium locking-liners and S30V blade steel are found in both sizes. You will only think you have seen this before..." YES ON SPYDERCO  knives ;)

Was the s30v 806 a limited production run? I snagged a D2 version. I don't really see the need for the hole on an AXIS lock knife since the AXIS lock allows for a better method of opening and closing, IMO.

oldest spyderco I've ever owned an aluminum handled cricket from about 10 years ago. have a very smooth without opening will, spyderco is definitely aware of this option and has chosen to go with a more sharp edge, I personally do not have very soft hands, simply because there work with my hands for a living. if I did not know been easy thing to lightly file the edge and as has been mentioned. these are meant to be hard-working knives for outdoor types and military police and fire they are 90% of the cases not gentlemen carry.

As for the opening hole I will step out of line severely and say that any folding knife, it seems to be more they patented idea the sole property for seven years of the inventor, then a trademark although I could argue the other side in that when it was originally created the circular hole in the blade for opening would have made the knife look very distinctive a "trademark" look to the spyderco knife

as for the idea that bench made does the spider hole better I honestly do not believe this is the case for me the most important part of the operation of the opening device is not whether his comfy for the thumb. But how reliable it is, in terms of initially seeding your thumb for opening, how the ergonomics of the handle interact to ensure opening in the proper arc so you do not defeat yourself by pushing against the pivot, if you know what I mean and last that while you move through the arc from close to open your thumb does not encounter margins of the handle which will potentially dislodge her thumbs purchased on the opening mechanism. In my opinion spyderco's approach toward functionalism focuses more on their where world mechanics of the opening process.

No no. Hob folks rarely get banned in this discussion. Some bottom feader drops in and stirs up the excrement, it percolates a bit, then someone like Boats drops in and says the same nonsense that has been said before, then some goofus like me retorts in kind, Boats retorts to my retort. Four people reply to his retort. Sal comes in, says eight words that make us all feel ashamed, and we go away. Anyone that doesn't usually attracts Cougar, who talks about gentle beings and shows a picture of a snapping turtle.

About that time, someone posts a new Cold Steel vs. Stryder thread and the true Benchmade and Spyderco fans go back to thumbing their opening devices and sharpening their blades while the bottom feaders rush off to feed on the scraps. (hmmm the rolleyes smilie has changed)

Blast, you're right!

As others have pointed out, if the edge of the hole is too sharp, you can smooth said edges in less than a minute with a bit of sandpaper or a fine file. However, you cannot readily make a chamfered hole sharper/grippier without a lot of work. Shipping the knife with a sharper-edged hole makes it trivial to tune the knife to suit your own preference.

Geez Zen, you really got this down to a science.:D

Well said Zen :D :D
I would say this is a fitting end to this thread. If not, to each his own.
