BM going direct dealer only?

I recently tried to order a BM710BK from New Graham and received an email that they would be unable to fill the order as they were out of stock, and would not be getting any more, as BM is going direct dealer only. Does anyone know anymore about this? Are we going to be stuck paying full retail straight to BM for any future BM purchases? I ended up changing my order to a Spyderco Police G10, and I'm looking forward to getting that, but I would hate to have to write off Benchmade.

There's been some talk about that in some other threads. Benchmade no doubt believes it will benefit its bottom line, but consumers (at least here) don't think its a swell idea. Sounds crazy to me, but I'm not in the knife selling business either.

That's certainly the rumor that's going around, though I have yet to see any confirmation of that. If so, I think it's a pretty dumb idea also. But I'm not in the knife business either.

I was discussing with a friend.. That it probably wouldn't be that bad of a price hike..
Think about the fact .. you can pay 150$ for a VG-10 Japan Spyderco.. And "for example", you can still get a mini rukus for the same amount with S30V, G-10, micarta and US made...
I still think BM is producing a better US product for the price.. Along with kershaw.. That company does amazing things within my budget...

I can sort of see the rationale of catering only to authorized dealers with a store front. It levels the playing field for the B&M stores, increases the per unit profit to Benchmade and allows B&M stores to make a decent profit on Benchmade product. The ones that will loose out are the volume discounters.

I don't know if the prices will go up. I just bought 3 BM knives from an authorized store and the prices were the same as last year. I don't know if a price raise is immanent, but I would still pay a fair asking price because after all, it is a Benchmade. ;)

so even authorized dealers online and instore will stop getting bm?

I am in the knife business, and I can tell you it's true. I felt bad for our sales rep through our primary distributor, because their booth was right next to Benchmade's at SHOT. They can't get them anymore and he got to watch us sit at the Benchmade booth and spend $15,000. Poor guy.

i didnt really understand

Our shop goes mostly through a distributing company. We're able to order all of our lines through them, and we used to get a lot of Benchmade from them. Now that it's dealer direct, we have to by direct from Benchmade and not through our distributor. Said distributor's booth was right next to Benchmade, so it kind of stung a little bit for them. We still buy all of our other knives through them, including Spyderco, Kershaw, etc.

I have seen a multitude of these these threads lately and still don't understand what exactly Benchmade are trying to do with their new sales strategy.

At the least, they are turning me as a consumer away from them. I don't want to bash them but I know I'll give my money other companies, sorry.

I have tried to like them but something is weird there. Maybe if they'd like to keep the good designs in lineup and not replace them with odd, ugly, strangely angular things it would be better.

Anyways, no hate here, just wondering. But BM is.. not so cool anymore.

To do this during normal times would be stupid. To do it during a depression is incredibly stupid. Even discounted, Benchmade knives are a bit on the high side. Add to that whatever overhead brick and mortar shops carry and it's suicide. I seriously doubt this policy will last long. Within six months businesses will be closing all over the country. I wonder what reasons Benchmade will use to reverse their new policy?

I'm a big fan of Benchmade, they are probably my favorite manufacturer, but as a result of their decision, I ended up buying a Spyderco this time instead. There is no doubt they will lose sales as a result. They already have.

What Benchmade has decided to do is to supply their authorized dealers only. No more selling to wholesale distributors. To become an authorized dealer of Benchmade knives you have to have a brick & mortar store. New Graham has a brick & mortar store, so I wonder if also having an online store is a no-no as far as Benchmade is concerned?

Even if NGK were still getting Benchmades, they might have a hard time finding you a 710BK. It's my understanding that the 710 with a plain edge coated blade has become rather hard to find.

I see no benefit except at all, in this. It'll increase prices and will bring the sales down IMHO. I don't think I'll be shopping in B&M stores because of that.
Shiz. it's 21st century, everything is online... Instead progressing themselves, simpler trying to force extra $$ out of the customer. And the timing is just perfect for doing such things... Even though I was pretty much BM exclusive with my folders, I won't support that stupid policy...

Dealers have to order like 20 at a time so most don't bother with it

Curiously enough, New Graham is not an authorized BM dealer. I entered New Graham's Zip into the BM store finder and it turned up zilch for a 10 mile radius.

Also, the B&M that I get my Benchmades from has a web store, which includes Benchmade listings. Go figure.
