Recommendation? Boating knife

Try the Camillus Marlin-Spike

Just under $40. The blade is a 3.5" sheeps-foot made of VG10 with a titanium nitride finish. Should be very corrosion resistant. It's thin with a wide, hollow grind. Good slicer that's very easy to sharpens.

This is a great little knife, I have one and carry it from time to time. Myerchin knives are, in my experience (I own 4), are a great choice as well. However I really believe if he needs a spike, the spike on folders will only work for "small stuff" (under 1inch in diameter), they just don't have the length for the larger diameter ropes and lines.

Size matters immensely as to what you would choose. For small rope, I think the SAK works well. I think a 1" diameter rope is stretching it a bit (optimistic) for a small tool. If he's on a ship with very large ropes, get a dedicated spike and a dedicated knife.

Added: A small pliers might be a very useful tool to have on you. With rope and the forces needed to be applied, you probably need something stronger than your fingers to grip the rope in an attempt to unknot anything over about 1/4" diameter.

Personally, in the 3"-bladed range, I would suggest a serrated Spyderco Salt 2. Plus a separate tool for undoing knots.

I agree entirely, I carry my Leatherman Surge at work. The SAK is great as well but I use my helmsman on my personal boat which only has small stuff on it. The shackle key built into the "spike" or whatever SAK calls it is pretty useful on my small sailboat.

In case he wants to go old school.

I have one of those, a gift from my father. The pivots are ridiculously tight, even after oiling. It's a cool knife. The generous bail lets it double as an anchor, LOL. By the way, that's a very nice photograph.
