BOB knives?

The vast majority of threads are about EDC knives and it makes sense, that is the most common use for most of us.

However, I'm updating my BOB (Bug Out Bag) and was wondering what are the common/popular/"best" knives for the situation.

So, if you have a BOB, what knife/knives you do have in it? If you don't, which would you include?

Welcome to BF. I keep a Cold Steel Bushman and Gerber MT in my truck. Both will fill their role if needed without being top of the line products. Both are inexpensive and easily replaced if stolen.

If you carry your BOB with you all the time, you can generally afford to carry a nicer set of equipment. If you leave your BOB in your car/truck, many folks (like myself) tend to go for cheaper alternatives in case they are stolen.

Other popular choices are Kabar, Beckers, Moras (Swedan?), and RAT.

I'm also looking for the right knife (or knives) to add to my bug-out kit. Right now I'm leaning towards a KA-BAR USMC. I'd love to see others' thoughts on that choice, as well as any recommendations.

I know the square root of jack-doodley about knives, but I learn more with every forum post I read.

I carry one of Michael Morris's file knives and a Mini Grip in my BOB

Falkniven s-1. When push comes to shove the safety of theoretical perhaping dies quickly. I would like to think i would be able to survive with a razor blade and my romantisized movie type fantasies, however as im wipeing away the tears of failure ill know is was not because of my glock 17 or my s-1.

Welcome!

I'd say (depending on where you are bugging out to and for how long) you could never go wrong with a multi-tool, a large sturdy fixed blade, and a hatchet. Pick a combo that works best for what you think you might have to do. Are you bugging out to the mountains, a friend's house, the nearest FEMA shelter??? Are you preparing for an event that will last a week or for an end of the world scenario? Pick the right tool for the job (whatever you imagine the job will entail).

In my bug out bag I have a Leatherman Wave, Swiss Army Knife, A Becker Tac-Tool, and a Gerber Hatchet.

I have a Leatherman Supertool secured in my "BOB" and in molle pouch on the side I have a 7" CRK Green Beret. I used to have a Scrap Yard S6 in it's place but I am going to try the CRK for a bit and see what happens. With that and what ever I may have on my person I will have to make it work.

get a leatherman wave and a rat cutlery RC-6 and RC-3. throw in a folder that suits your needs and your good to go.

you can throw in a sharpener and a hatchet/small axe for extended use.

good luck. seriously tho look into the rat cutlery products they are superb.

Depending on what you are willing to spend, a folder, multi-tool, and a fixed blade seems to be what some are saying. If so then you could go with a Spyderco Endura, I've never had one nor handled one, but with all the positive reviews you find on it, it must be pretty good! A Leatherman multi tool, maybe a Kick at around $30, or a Blast at around $50. The fixed blade could be easily had at under $100, and since I just got this one I'll post it, a Ontario Ranger RD-4. With these picks though you are talking between $200 to $250, and don't know if you want to spend that kind of money for a BOB.

Right now, its an Orange Mora Clipper with Leatherman Core for the car bag, Ontario Pilots Knife for the house.

funny id say the exact opposite. my BOB has my busses and some of my nicer kit. it has much nicer stuff than i generally carry even in the field or just to edc. as i see it the entire point of the bob is a shtf type scenario so why go cheap on the bob? if you wanna stake your life on a mora go ahead theyre fine knives but if i had to live out of a F$%^ing bag for a month or longer id want something alot sturdier.

Thank you all who posted.

I would agree with what razorsdescent said, if your and your family's lives are supposed to depend on what's in it, you'd want the best.

On that thought, what are the opinions on custom knives like a Randall #14 or 18?
Does a custom, in practice, really give you much more than, say, a Fallkniven or a RAT?

I keep stuff in my truck too. I have a Victorinox Rescue tool, a Ranger custom RD 4, a Delica 4, SAK blue alox Farmer, a Gerber multitool ( I have had it for years. It was a gift.), 2 SF's, and other flashlights. All this stuff lives in my truck.

No, you do get to pay more. I dont like the up keep 1095 may require in the field, but if you dont mind keeping it clean, and dry it would be a fine choice.

Totally agree.

A good multitool usually comes with a decent folder (or 2, like LM Wave with one plain and one serrated). For hard use you pick a fixed blade, and to chop trees for shelter and fire you get a hatchet. If you got all three, feel free to add a hunting folder, a filet knife, whatever.

Right now my bob contains a SOG fusion bowie, a mora clipper, leatherman core and a fiskars sliding saw and a stanley knife. I might switch the fusion bowie with a revolver and dump the saw but thats whats there now. I also plan to get a county comm breacher bar and sharpen the edge and make a sheath for it as a bash/pry/chop knife.
