However, I'm updating my BOB (Bug Out Bag) and was wondering what are the common/popular/"best" knives for the situation.
This is a common topic in the
Wilderness & Survival Skills sub-section of forum. You should be able to find some good recomendations there.
Personally, I think you need two knives in your pack. A medium sized folder or perhaps a multi-tool for routine small jobs (preparing food, opening packages, cutting rope). I currently like the
Victorinox Outrider. A nice locking main blade, with several useful tools included (scissors, can opener, bottle opener, screwdrivers, and woodsaw).
Next, I like a heavier, medium or large fixed blade. If you carry an axe along, a medium blade (4-5 inches) is good and will handle all the tougher tasks (dressing game, bushcraft, etc.). I currently have a BRKT
Highland Special which is very nice for this niche. An RAT
RC-4 would also be a good choice. If you don't carry an axe, I would probably go with an even larger blade of 6-7 inches (or even more) to work better for chopping and battoning wood. Here, a RAT
RC-6 could fill the bill.
Hope that helps!
